GeneralAnother mineral collection to be hidden from the public

13th Aug 2012 17:01 UTCHoward Heitner

The mineral collection of the California Mining and Mineral Museum in Mariposa, CA is about to be put into storage because of budget cuts. See the story in the LA Times http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-mariposa-gold-20120813,0,2406423.story Whenever a great collection like this is stored there is always a serious danger of theft and/or damage. Can anything be done to prevent this?

Howard,

Thanks for alerting us, but the LA Times is not the most accurate source.

There was a story in last week's Mariposa Gazette about the museum seeking volunteers.

Can you find the real story?

Dean, you are right. The L.A. Times did a poor job on reporting this issue.

The Mining and Mineral Museum is still open to the public and all of the finest display items are still on exhibit. Our Association continues to fund the State Parks interpretive position and support it's educational programs. With all the problems State Parks is having at the moment, I do not see a closure threat until next year. Our Association needs support from organizations like this, and invite you to visit the best mineral collection in northern California. This collection has been on continuous exhibit for 132 years and is the official mineral collection for the State of California.
