GeneralSpecimens with minID but no photos in Mindat?

25th Jan 2016 15:54 UTCKelly Nash 🌟 Expert

While researching New York City mineral localities, I ran across this specimen: http://www.minfind.com/mineral-231861.html on the Minfind (commercial) site, with several photos. It has a minID, but searching for it in Mindat brings up a page with no images (www.mindat.org/NL5-YLV) and it's not in the locality galleries (e.g. Manhattan, New York City). According to the write-up here, on the benefits of minID, one of them is "Access all public photos of a specimen you own, even previous dealer photos and photos by previous owners." I guess the photos on minfind are copyrighted by the seller, but the value of a minID is compromised if there is no photo available on Mindat, and little in the way of a description other than the commercial blurb from Minfind.

Hmm.... Surprised there is no trace of this at Mindat. One possibility is that someone entered the piece in their catalogue here but didn't have a photo. If they deaccessioned their piece to a dealer, it might have had the MinId on the label.

On the other hand, The overwhelming success of MinID may have caused some one to invent their own MinID numbers:-D

The minID info page says: "2,566,711 minIDs have been issued as of 25th Jan 2016 4:25 pm UTC".

So, 2.5 million minIDs and less than 1 million photos on Mindat means the majority of minIDs were issued for specimens that do not have a photo on Mindat.

All specimens that are listed on Minfind generate a MinID automatically. I wonder if dealers are aware that a MinID is automatically generated when they advertise a specimen on Minfind?

Then there is the possibility that after a specimen is sold, the dealer will then post the specimen on Mindat with a second MinID. If the buyer isn’t aware that the dealer posts pictures on Mindat, but decides to record the specimen in his catalog, then again it will generate yet another MinID!

A suggestion could be that Minfind/Mindat could ask dealers for permission to automatically upload the specimen’s picture when they list it on Minfind. That way this problem could be somewhat avoided…

Th main problem with bringing photos from Minfind to mindat is getting the localities right. Most will be able to find the correct location, but there will be some that don't match. When you have several hundred thousand photos, there is still a lot more work than is feasible to do.

The compromise is to bring them into minID but not the rest of mindat - so that a minID search will show them but they won't be in the other galleries.

Hi

I know that I have purchased specimens through minfind and they had minIDs and to date there is still no photo available.

I have adopted minID for my collection (in conjunction with my own numbering system). For the specimens acquired that already have a minID I immediately get a photo for my catalogue and then I can take my own photos later. In addition, where a mineral purchased/acquired has a minID, but no photo, then when I produce a catalogue listing I can immediately see which specimens don't have a photo and proceed to remedy the issue.

I have also created minIDs for specimens without photos. Several specimens in my collection have been catalogued years ago but no photo made. The specimens have been uploaded to minID anyway. Again, the advantage in doing so enables me to see which ones need photos and so I can address the issue whenever I have time available.

When specimens that have two or more minIDs are merged, what happens to the former minIDs that are removed? I imagine that they have not been used yet, but that may create an anomaly in matching the numbers.

Cheers for now

Keith

merged minIDs will never be reused.
