Are you sure it's hematite?

Did you do a streak test, what color was it?

Where in Mass did you find it?

It looks like schist from your photo, could you post a few more (clear) photos, from diffrent angles?

Mass does have several places to find it.

Looks like mica schist (muscovite) with garnets (red-purple, dots) - ?

Hi. Try to obtain the streak: try to "write" with a small chunk on an unglazed porcelain (e.g., bottom of a plate). If its red -> you have hematite. However, I also find the specimen more like a shale. If there is no colour or the colour is gray then you have phlogopite or annite (biotite). Also, a close-up of the specimen would be needed to say more.
