GeneralAre any members using the Mineral Record suite of Programs?

24th Sep 2016 06:04 UTCMichael Pond

Dear Community,

I have been using the Mineral Record collection suite of programs for 2 years now with great success. The program offers the perfect combination of ease of use, flexibility, and customization.

I have not been able to make any contact with Nexus software, and with the passing of Rock Currier, my only contact with the developers is now gone. My concern is that although I have a fine working system now, sometime in the future I will need to re-install on a new computer and will need a new hardware code.

I am reaching out to the community for any other users.

Thank you.

Michael

All viewers,

Well it has been about 2 months and no comments to my post?

Can anybody comment on the Mineral Record program ? Users, people that may be contacted?,

or any other suggestions on how I might continue to use this great program I purchased now that the developer (Rock Currier) has passed on?

I have a good working Win7 system, but we all know a computer will not work forever.

Thank you for any leads to go forward with.

Sincerely,

Michael Pond

Hi Michael, I sympathize. A while back, the program I was using became obsolete and I had to rebuild my catalog. I really believe it is important to choose a database that is not going to go away. I chose to build my catalog in Microsoft Access (most recent version). The learning curve was a little steep, but I have it doing everything I want it to do. Excel is quite a bit easier, but nowhere near as flexible. Good luck.

There is of course the Mindat system, which has the advantage that you can make it public, if you wish, at any point in the future, which means your data could serve a future generation of collectors and not just vanish when your heirs give your computer to the thrift shop.

And then there is still the option of paper and a fireproof safe.
We are having exactly the same problem, already since 2005. The museum bought the Geolib database from Lars Jørgensen many years ago. For me this was the ultimate tool for working with the collection. Unfortunately Jørgensen died and nobody took over the work with the database. It was running excusively on Windows 98. Since that PC was getting unstable, I was scared to even turn it on. Every time I did, some folders got corrupted. The database file was a password protected Access file, so the data is safe. Before his dead he gave us the key.

Efforts here in Norway to develop a special module for a database used by many museums (Primus) failed completely.

Whenever I need to find some information, I need to open the complete table. But without a good interface this is not convenient at all. Our plan was to start adding pictures and make it possible to print out files.

If there is anybody who has a working Access database with a simple but effective interface, please take contact...
