Mineral ShowsThe recent large Chinese mineral shows

2nd Jun 2015 13:47 UTCBob Harman

I have never been to any of the large Chinese mineral shows, but following them on several websites I have developed a sense of awe and wonderment!

First let me say that I am sure at least one or two recent Chinese shows have managed to come off well and without major hassles. But of the others, the first Changsha show had more than its fair share of problems. The Chinese were over the top with rules and regulations about many of the dealers crates of minerals being brought into the country and to their booths at the international show. At show time, many dealers did not even have their specimens for sale as the crates were still off site being examined by the authorities.

Despite this, the second year of the show was to be run much more smoothly and apparently it was. The dealers came back for this second try and this time things apparently did go better. The Chinese were beginning to get the knack of how to successfully put on a truly international show. Everyone looked forward to an even better 3rd year for Changsha! Everyone that is except the people responsible for putting on the show and other province politicians. I am not sure what happened, but some type of screwups took place and the bottom line was that the 3rd year Changsha show never even took place! It was totally cancelled.

So recently this 2015 spring the Changsha show was replaced by a show in Chenzhou, a city some hours away. The Chenzhou show. Everything was in readiness with much anticipation. According to posts on Jordi Fabre's mineral forum the local government hyped up the show and closed everything down so all the local populous could attend the show. Everyone did (!) attend the show flowing down to the venue like lemmings. There was wall to wall humanity. By some accounts up to 350,000 folks at the 3 day show. Everyone touching and fingering and bumping into the specimens for sale in the dealer booths. The dealers, many of whom were higher end international dealers, spent most of their time trying to protect their specimens rather than trying to sell them! By some accounts many serious buyers, sophisticated affluent Chinese mineral collectors, left for home. Does anyone have any first hand accounts of these shows to add to my discussion?

I suppose, given enough time, large international mineral shows in China will routinely come off successfully and without major hitches. Just in time for North Korea to try its first large international mineral show; probably unintentionally conflicting with its armed forces military parade day :) !
