Should we add Green Hydrogen to the Hydrogen page, in artificial materials? (green Hydrogen is hydrogen made artificially)

All hydrogen found on earth is manufactured, I am not aware of any significant source of commercial hydrogen deposits occurring naturally. Use of terms such as "e-hydrogen", "green hydrogen", "blue-hydrogen", etc. is a combination of marketing and politics for what is just hydrogen, H2, and should be avoided.

Hi Jeff,
Natural, not man-made, hydrogen gas actually evolves from the depths of the Earth and its degassing into space has been known for a long time. In some spots its production reaches commercially-viable volumes.
Try googling hydrogen mining.

Rightly or wrongly we list gold hydrogen, white hydrogen and natural hydrogen in Mindat as synonyms of hydrogen. It’s obviously not a mineral in the mineralogical sense, but it does occur naturally and is common as a component of natural gases. There is currently a lot of exploration for it. Can also be termed geological hydrogen.

There is also green hydrogen produced by electrolysis of water, while grey, brown, blue or black hydrogen are obtained from fossil fuels. Not sure of the point of all these different names or if they are needed? It’s a bit like copper or iron, they occur naturally but most of what we see is manufactured but is there any point in adding synthetic equivalents of every mineral, element or compound we can create to Mindat?

Ralph - to be clear, its only 'green' if the source of electricity, for the electrolysis, is 'green' - wind or solar primarily. Otherwise, its all just hydrogen

True Jeff, but  I suspect there is always going to be a lot of non-renewable energy involved in the production, transport, storage etc!

Ralph, that's the dirty (pun intended) secret of all forms of 'clean' energy. Even solar and wind generated power have a significant carbon footprint

We get into a mess whenever we conflate Mindat pages for the commercial or purified element with the natural or native element, which need to be two distinct pages. "Green" or any other "color" of hydrogen is industrially produced and therefore could be mentioned on the H element page, but never as a "synonym" or "variety" of the natural Hydrogen page.

The Mercury page is a good example of a conflated mess: locality list and photos all of natural native mercury, plus crystal data of artificially frozen mercury.
