Hi
Is all Trepca Sphalerite of the Marmatite variety?
This specimen is reported as being from Trepca but the Sphalerite isn't jet black as in other pieces I have seen.
Thanks for your help.

Mark,

I also have a Trepça specimen without being a marmatite. Seems that the 2 " varieties " coëxist.
Just label it as sphalerite.

Keep safe.

Thanks Paul. It was more the locality I was doubting. I have seen several sphalerite with quartz from Huaron, Peru which are not dissimilar.

"Marmatite" is an informal varietal name used to describe blackish, iron-rich sphalerite, so it would be up to you to apply that name if you think it's helpful.   In any case it's still sphalerite mineralogically.

Mark,

This is the specimen I was talking about.

Keep safe.

Not dissimilar. There is no calcite on mine only quartz and a trace of galena.
All the best

Paul, I would not call this one marmatite; it looks more brown than black.

Alfredo, you are right and that is why I uploaded it as sphalerite.

Best regards.
