FossilsHow to clean ammonites using Ethanolamine Thioglycollate

16th Apr 2024 23:49 UTCKate Brown

I recently traveled to Lyme Regis to collect some ammonites and I have wanted to prep them with a diluted solution of Ethanolamine Thioglycollate (similar to Britain’s “Pyrite Stop”). Unfortunately I’ve had trouble locating a company that will sell the chemical to an individual. Can anyone help? Thank you in advance.

A lot depends on which country you're in, and if you're near a major city.

A Google search prefers the spelling:
Ethanolamine Thioglycolate

Looks like you are in the UK given that you travelled to Lyme Regis.

The Ethanolamine Thioglycolate is only for treatment after the initial prep of the specimen to avoid pyrite disease.
I may be incorrect but I think that most of those fossils are simply coated with a clear varnish after prepping, other than museum prepared material.

You will still face the problem of appropriate storage afterwards, such as low humidity.

As for purchasing the chemical  it - I looked up google and appears to be available in UK on ebay and other sites so I suggest you search on-line.
