Improving Mindat.orgWeardale fluorite / South Cumberland Mine

5th Jul 2005 19:44 UTCLloyd L

There are 3 mineral photos associated with South Cumberland Mine, Eskdale, Cumbria.

Two are of fluorites which both look like they're from the North Pennines (probably someone with better local knowledge than mine would be able to be a lot more precise - you out there Helen? :-)). The Rob Lavinsky pic description actually states that it is under the wrong locality, so why is it still there?

The baryte photo is also doubtful to me. I've never seen any baryte in Eskdale - it is more commonly found away from the granites in the limestone-born part of the iron-ore field further west around the famous localities of Frizington, Egremont and Cleator Moor.

Could all three photos have been assigned to this locality at a time when it was the only one to contain the word 'Cumberland'?

hi lloyd

have to agree that the photo locations seem very wrong!

photos probably ought to be removed

cheers

Although the 2 fluorites are quite ordinary, and wouldn't really be missed, the baryte I thought was rather nice and it'd be a shame to just delete it.

How about just putting it in the West Cumberland Iron Field?

Hope Oz was good. The Bear was excellent, as usual, but Markham a bit disappointing. This was probably because I was only allowed out for an hour or so. Had you been there, I'd have had a better excuse...........!?

Next time.

hi lloyd

oz great thanks. caught up with friends in sydney. drank lots and went to see lots of great collections. got into the mines at broken hill and collected gold in western australia. but best of all were the lobsters - so cheap compard to the uk! ate loads!

few days r&r in bangkok on the way back - cocktails on the terrace of the oriental most evenings - life can be so hard at times!

agree that the barite shouldn't just disappear - much too nice.

must get together on a coaltip soon!
