Improving Mindat.orgKipushite

23rd Nov 2014 08:20 UTCHerwig Pelckmans

Gentle(wo)men,

I noticed some things should be corrected for the mineral kipushite.

According to the IMA list (2014-09), the description of kipushite was published in the Canadian Mineralogist 23 (1985), 35. The full reference of that article is:

PIRET, P., DELIENS, M. & PIRET-MEUNIER, J. (1985) Occurrence and crystal structure of kipushite, a new copper-zinc phosphate from Kipushi, Zaire. Canadian Mineralogist,23, 35-42.

On the other hand, a description of a mineral named kipushite was published by Buttgenbach in 1926 in the following publication:

BUTTGENBACH, H. (1926) Description d'un minéral du Katanga. Bull. de l'Acad. roy. de Belg., Classe des Sciences, tome 12, p.905-913, 1926.

This mineral was later shown to be identical with veszelyite by various authors, like Zsivny (1932), Buttgenbach (1941) and Berry (1948).

On Mindat, there are actually two mineral pages for kipushite:

http://www.mindat.org/min-2215.html

http://www.mindat.org/min-5715.html : Kipushite (of Piret et al.)

It is clear that Mindat webpage min-5715.html should read:

Kipushite (of Buttgenbach)

* Name: Originaly described by Henri Buttgenbach in 1926 and named for the locality where it was found (Kipushi Mine, Katanga, former Belgian Congo).

*Synonym of : veszelyite.

* Reference List:

Kr., 82, 87-110.

Buttgenbach (1941) La kipushite et l’arakawaïte, Bull. Acad. Roy. Belg., Cl. p. 448.

Berry, L.B. (1948) Structural crystallography of lazulite, scorzalite and veszeleyite (abstr.), Am. Mineral. 33, 750

On the Mindat min-2215.html webpage I suggest the following changes or additions:

* Name:

Named in 1985 by Paul Piret, Michel Deliens and Jacqueline PIRET-MEUNIER, after the type locality at the Kipushi Mine (Prince Léopold Mine), Kipushi, Lubumbashi (Elizabethville), Katanga (Shaba), Congo (Zaïre).

* Reference List:

PIRET, P., DELIENS, M. & PIRET-MEUNIER, J. (1985) Occurrence and crystal structure of kipushite, a new copper-zinc phosphate from Kipushi, Zaire. Canadian Mineralogist,23, 35-42.

Hope this helps.

Cheers, Herwig

Thanks. Now fixed.

I kept the Kipushite (of Piret et al.) http://www.mindat.org/min-5715.html as synonym for kipushite. But added Kipushite (of Buttgenbach) as a new entry: http://www.mindat.org/min-46393.html
