Improving Mindat.orgAutunite from Bancroft?

18th Dec 2014 18:18 UTCReiner Mielke Expert

http://www.mindat.org/photo-191402.html what proof is there that this is autunite? See: http://www.mindat.org/forum.php?read,7,210788,page=1

I had complained about this photo on July 9th of this year and asked if the specimen might actually be hyalite. I had checked the box preventing it from being viewed sitewide. Yesterday, I clicked to resolve the unanswered complaint and left the box unchecked so that the image would be in "user gallery only". Did it appear "sitewide"?

Hello Van,

As far as I know it wasn't site wide but since it came up again for approval I thought it would be worth while to bring it to the general attention of collectors that green fluorescence does not prove you have autunite. I hope that this time it is remembered.

Hello Van,

Why does that photo keep coming up for approval? I assign it to the personal gallery or question it and it keeps coming back for approval? It has come up at least 10 times so far.

Even the tiniest edit will bring a photo back.

"Why does that photo keep coming up for approval" - You need to resolve the "complaint" first. "Questioning" it just places a note on the approval page that someone has put a temporary note on it so that no one else would approve the photo.

Hello David,

Van already lodged a detailed complaint, shouldn't the photo not come up for approval again until the photographer has responded ? Nevertheless do I understand you correctly in that as long as I not question it anymore, it will not come up for approval again until the photographer responds? In otherwords I should just assign it to the user gallery and wait for a reponse from the photographer? I will try that and see what happens.

I did "resolve" the complaint. My comment was because of "no response". I left the box "view sitewide" unchecked.

Actually, it the status is listed as having been edited after email contact with photographer (with no resolution in the database).

OK My first thought was just to delete this and have done with it. However there is good info here. So I edited the photo, changing autunite to hyalite and added Hyalite to the locality's mineral list with Michael Adamowicz Collection as the reference. Perhaps Michael will forgive me and edit his article on this locality to add the new mineral he has found there.

Hello Rob,

You can also get that sort of fluorescence from carbonate minerals and maybe other minerals as well. For example I had an altered thorite crystal from Kipawa that fluoresced bright green. I put it in HCl and most of it dissolved ( with effervescence) leaving behind a white residue that looked like silica ( opal?). However the insoluble residue did not fluoresce and was not radioactive but the acid was radioactive. This indicated that the uranyl ion was in the carbonate not the silica. What needs to be done is a sample of the fluorescent material needs to be tested before anyone can say what it is. Other minerals may also be able to incorporate uranyl ions and fluoresce. The only thing I am confident about is that it is not autunite.

You are right Reiner. It is the uranyl ion that's fluorescing, but it is not clear what contains it. I'll try to put a ? on Hyalite and note this in Hyalite info. Maybe Michael can do the test, though I wonder if the Uranyl might not leach from the silica?

22nd Dec 2014 22:43 UTCReiner Mielke Expert

Well I guess I can test that theory easy enough by putting some fluorescent opal in acid. I will try that right away.

After twelve hours in concentrated HCl there was no change in the fluorescence of the hyalite opal sample or dissolution of the hyalite opal ( sample from North Carolina). I would say it is not likely any uranyl ion would be leached from opal by HCl.

Reiner, thank you very much for this!!! ( I'm mulling the Cubanite and arsenides;-) )
