Improving Mindat.orgPhoto descriptions disappearing

25th Jan 2015 04:05 UTCNorman King 🌟 Expert

Whenever I edit a photograph, that is, replace it with a new one (better, of course), the photo description disappears. Nothing else does. I am not editing the descriptions in any way. They just disappear on their own, when I edit the photo. Editing anything else does not have the same effect.

I think that's a deliberate function, Norman, because caption information can change when a photo is replaced. In case you want to keep the same photo caption and not write a new one when you change a photo, then you need to copy and paste the old one into the new caption box.

No, it's not deliberate. I'll look into it. It's probably due to a ' character in the description, with the new server update this is catching us out in various places.

Actually I think it is the camera you are using. The photo upload program is replacing the description field in out database with the description that is in the EXIF info that is generated by the photo upload. It is a known bug and needs to get fixed (ie don't replace description if EXIF description is blank).

Aha - well caught David. Will look at that now

But it's already checking to make sure it's not empty.

So the camera must be putting some default content in the field.

Norman, can you email me a copy of the JPEG you uploaded which caused the problem.

It's also really helpful if you, or anyone else, has problems with a photo to include a link here to an example image where you experienced the issue.

I am not sure if it is looking for anything in the field or just if the field exists or some cameras use a blank space.

if($exif["ImageDescription"]) $cf->loadvar("comments",$exif["ImageDescription"]);

Also about ~5 lines from the bottom

if($thispic->comment<>$cf->getvar("comment")) $a=true;

should be

if($thispic->comments<>$cf->getvar("comments")) $a=true;

I have found that my photos in mindat are “washed out” relative to the original that I see on my screen. What I see on my screen is what the specimen looks like in person, as far as I can assess. Because of the loss of contrast when uploaded to mindat, however, I have to increase the contrast in Photoshop Elements. I often forget to do that, and that is what happened with the two photos of red beryl I uploaded yesterday (photos 661847 and 661848, both from the same original JPEG). I immediately saw that my specimen was just about the faintest one for red beryl in the whole gallery, so I increased the contrast and uploaded the replacement photos within a few minutes of the originals. I changed nothing else. Then I went back and saw that the descriptions were missing, so I had to rewrite them. It was easy this time, because I wrote the first versions so recently. But occasionally I notice a poor photo I uploaded years ago, and decide I can do better, either with a new photo or by just processing an older photo to increase the contrast, to remove spots and streaks, or maybe to even add a new background that sets off the mineral better. Sometimes I really have to wonder just what the original description said. I often edit the descriptions at the same time as the photos to remove size data which are now in special lines so no longer needs to be in the text. Those descriptions I edit at the same time don’t disappear. Note that I often use the original photos, as with the red beryl photos. So my camera does not change anything. BTW, I use a Canon “Power Shot” SX10IS with 5.0-100.0mm zoom lens. My photomicrographs are taken with a dedicated microscope-mounted camera system at the university sedimentology lab using QImaging software and saved in JPEG format. I don’t know the make of the camera or model number now, but I can get the information later if necessary. Jolyon, I will send the JPEG file for the red beryl to you shortly.
