Improving Mindat.orgKasolite New Mexico ID

11th Sep 2016 16:17 UTCFred E. Davis

Photo 770764 ( http://www.mindat.org/photo-770764.html ) mentions kasolite which is not listed for the locality, Red Hills, NM. How was the identification determined?

13th Sep 2016 14:35 UTCMichael C. Michayluk

Hi Fred. I was with Jerry when he collected the material. The ID was visual and I have isolated some grains to send for analysis. I will also be taking samples to a friends lab to measure radioactivity on Thursday. However, there has been kasolite reported and documented from the Derry district on mindat. Our material looks absolutely identical. As the red hills are part of the Derry district and contain rocks enriched in Uranium, this doesn't feel like a long shot. Nevertheless the ID is visual and we will edit accordingly as new information arises

Here is one of the photos uploaded prior to Jerry and I posting. You can see the matrix is pink/red as well

I look forward to the analytical results. Yours will be the first analyzed specimen from New Mexico!

Greetings,

The first round of results are in. This EDS graph seems an ok fit for kasolite

The analyst says, Pb, U minerals give him scattering issues, hence the Si?, but he believes kasolite.

Hi Michael,

I ran your XRD material last week and confirmed kasolite as well as a Pb-U oxide! Virgil will send you the report soon.
