Improving Mindat.orgFlekkern/Skrim

1st Nov 2006 20:55 UTCPeter Andresen Expert

In regard of new the post at IMA board, about some probably new mineral species ( http://www.mindat.org/mesg-14-49578.html ), an old was brought back to my memory...

If you read the article you will find that the right locality is "Flekkern" (or Lake Flekkern, but I recomend Flekkern, since the locality is not in the lake, and the area around the lake is known as Flekkern...):

http://www.mindat.org/loc-9658.html

This locality is inside the Skrim pluton, which have led to a missunderstanding and a not existing locality called "Skrim" ( http://www.mindat.org/loc.php?loc=13913 ). In Larvik there is no place named Skrim at all! This missunderstanding is most certainty due to that the northern most locality of larvikite, is within the Skrim pluton. This one should be deleted!

There is a place/area in Kongsberg, Buskerud with the name Skrim/Skrimsfjella (Skrim Mts), but to my knowledge no interesting minerals/important localities have yet been found there, but there is sure still something to be discovered... But a locality like Flekkern is not very likely to be found again.

Peter

Why not amend the locality to "Skrim pluton, Lake Flekkern, etc. ..." then ?

Because Flekkern is much more precise. The Skrim plutone is huge...

If it should be made even more precise we could add "Road cut at road to Svanstul, near Lake Flekkern", but I suggest that both this, and the information about it's relation as a limestone xenolite inside the Skrim pluton, should be added to the description field, and the locality remain named Flekkern, as this is the name used by collectors in Norway.

Regards

Peter

PS: give me a couple of days, and I'll read the article and do something with the locality page....

Have edited/updated the locality now, but it still shows "two localites listed", when I search for Flekkeren...
