Black Rock lode (Black Rock Open cut), Mount Isa Mines, Mount Isa district, Mt Isa - Cloncurry area, Queensland, Australia

In 1974 the Black Rock was the only operating open cut at MIM ..Nev was a supervisor in the lead smelters at the time and also a keen fossicker ..MIM needed flux silica at that time and it was decided to mine the old BLACK STAR surface exposures for silica ..A very small pit was opened up and it was here the wall of pyromorphite was found..Nev sought and gained permission for the lapidary club (most of who were more interested in minerals ) The club went in for the day and the result are the pyros you now see from the first BLACK STAR OPEN CUT..This pit was only working for about 4 months in 1974..
The Pyromorphite were either long prisms or short barrels
They were whitish,yellow (most common)or green
They were sometimes coated with cerussite(I think there is a photo on Mindat)
The matrix was yellowish jasper like
Sometimes there was a coating of a manganese like mineral on the jasper.

This site has been moderately famous for pyromorphite for many years. A couple collectors extracted a lot of specimens in the 1980's, but the workings are in a dangerous state now.



7.1 x 5.4 x 2.8 cm. Lustrous forest-green pyromorphite microcrystals cover massive pyromorphite matrix on this showy and excellent, old-time specimen from the Zeehan Queen Mine of Tasmania.

Old Lead mine on the border between Belgium and Luxembourg, about 10km from Bastogne.
Many good specimens have been found on the remaining dumps, also large cabinet specimens although they were/are rare.
Larger specimens are exceedingly hard to find but the locality remains a very good locality for thumbnail and MM specimens.

Clara Mine, Rankach Valley, Oberwolfach
Very famous for its rare and unique minerals (up to 400 valid species found there). On quartz pseudomorphs after Baryte with galena lenses, yellow groups of Pyromorphite xls up to about 1 cm can be found as well as beautiful needles and barrel shaped ones. Those are often pyromorphites (with P>As) as opposed by the labels of many collectors who label the yellow ones mimetite. Green, colourless (usually on Baryte, often with Segnitite/Beudantite) or even brown ones can be found, but those are usually micros.

Friedrich Christian and Herrensegen Mines, Wildschapbach Valley, Schapbach
old, abandoned mining district close by and very similiar to the Clara Mine. There quartz pseudomorphs after Baryte occur, too. Pyromorphite forms Pseudomorphs after cm-sized galena cubes and nice needle-shaped xls (usually grass-green). Whereas those old-time findings are almost all from Friedrich-Christian Mine, new findings with greyish green botryoidal aggregates on quartz come from Herrensegen Mine (I will upload a photo of my piece the next days).

Although there aren't any new finds, old material becomes available to collectors from time to time. The last good chance to acquire a fine one was when Jordí Fabre sold the Folch collection a couple of years ago which included several Wheal Alfred pyromorphites that once were in the collection of Arthur Russell. Unfortunately, we only have few photos of really good ones in our database. P. Haas


- Penberthy Crofts Mine, St Hilary, Cornwall




In the 1980s, a group of collectors made their way into the mine and recovered a large amount of reasonable specimens (a few of them outstanding). They are often associated with bayldonite - an association that is pretty rare anywhere else.

There are a lot more Cornish pyro localities (Menheniot area, Trevinnick mine, Pentire Glaze mine, ...), but most of them did not produce any specimens that can compete in terms of quality or originality (i.e. particular habits and/or associated species) with the best of the best on an international scale. Wheal Pool near Helston might be worth mentioning, but there are only a few specimens known (we have a photo in the database, though !), so I'm not sure whether we should include it here. P. Haas

From Peter Haas:
- Roughten Gill Mine proper: These specimens are old; most of them were recovered when the mine was still active. The best combos of pyromorphite with sky-blue plumbogummite came from the mine itself. On several occasions, a limited number of such specimens was also recovered from outcrops in the area, but these only reached thumbnail sizes.
- Outcrops of the Roughten Gill South vein below Iron Crag: These outcrops produced most of the well-known spindle-shaped crystals on iron-stained matrix.


The Caldbeck Fells localities also produced a large number of unusual habits and aggregations and all sorts of colours and colour-zoning.




Barstows Trench, Cumbria, UK,



Named after the famous collector Dick Barstow who opened it up in the 1970s. While Barstow's cut was named for him, he hasn't been the one who opened it up. There was another group of collectors working there, who used explosives to open up the area around a promising outcrop. Unfortunately, they made a big mistake in estimating the amount and totally blew up the area. Though, they were right in guessing that there would be some trouble after the explosion and decided that it would be better to leave. When Barstow arrived, he only had to dig a little further to break into the old stope which was full of pyromorphites. This locality produced a very large number of specimens and it needs to be noted, that many of them were of a rather low quality (damaged crystals). Even the bad ones, however, are occasionally traded for high prices (especially abroad) and I have seen dealers here in Germany who insist that this is because the material is rare. This may be the case with specimens from the mine, but for most other localities in the area, it is simply not true. Even the good ones from Barstow's cut are not particularly rare (good Cornish ones, for instance, are a lot rarer). The most stunning feature of these specimens is probably the wide range of colours. Some specimens had bright yellow pyros on one side and grass green ones on the other. Analyses confirmed that they are all pyromorphites and that they even have almost the same P/As ratio ! (however, some people keep on labelling the yellow ones as mimetites).(from Peter Haas)

Bwlch Glas Mine, Wales, UK



Finally, we should add the Welsh lead mine field, for which the Bwlch Glas Mine will be a good representative. An important find was made there only a few decades ago, and many of the specimens found their way in foreign collection. The typical acicular habit, and the irregular integrowth of the crystals found on many specimens make these pyros characteristic and worth mentioning. P. Haas

I will give you an overviw over the German pyromorphite localities. It will be a lot of work as there are many historical and actual localities which have delivered very rich and good pyromorphites.

This is just a first overview. I will add links and additional information to some localities the next days.

Heilige Dreifaltigkeit Mine, Zschopau (most probably the type locality, rarely galena ps. after pyromorphite occurs, too).

From this classic locality the most and the best German Pyromorphites came. Usually the xls are olive green or pale brown and prismatic, often barrel-shaped (so-called Emser Tönnchen).

From here Blue Lead Ore (Blaubleierz), which is galena after pyromorphite. But the other case (p. ps. after g.) occurs, too.

old lead mine, mined for fluorite in the 1950'ies. Greyish green pyromorphite xls up to 1 cm on flesh-coloured baryte xls

Clara Mine, Rankach Valley, Oberwolfach
Very famous for its rare and unique minerals (up to 400 valid species found there). On quartz pseudomorphs after Baryte with galena lenses, yellow groups of Pyromorphite xls up to about 1 cm can be found as well as beautiful needles and barrel shaped ones. Those are often pyromorphites (with P>As) as opposed by the labels of many collectors who label the yellow ones mimetite. Green, colourless (usually on Baryte, often with Segnitite/Beudantite) or even brown ones can be found, but those are usually micros.

Friedrich Christian and Herrensegen Mines, Wildschapbach Valley, Schapbach
old, abandoned mining district close by and very similiar to the Clara Mine. There quartz pseudomorphs after Baryte occur, too. Pyromorphite forms Pseudomorphs after cm-sized galena cubes and nice needle-shaped xls (usually grass-green). Whereas those old-time findings are almost all from Friedrich-Christian Mine, new findings with greyish green botryoidal aggregates on quartz come from Herrensegen Mine (I will upload a photo of my piece the next days).

Middle Black Forest
Giesen Valley, Reichenbach, Lahr
very old mines (12th century), old small-scale mines and dumps. On baryte, limonite (botryoidal) and/or triassic Sandstone very good prismatic grass-green to greyish green prismatic or cigar shaped xls

Schauinsland Mining District
Gespreng Vein
Willnau Vein
Fahrnacker vein I and II
Barbara Vein

Roger: Thanks for your help. I do really appreciate it. I do have lots of experience and literature concerning the Black Forest localities, but not so much concerning the Rhineland ones. Surely I know Bad Ems and some of the Taunus ones from several descriptions, but have never been there, unfortunately.

I will write some about Saxony, especially the Freiberg area, where I lived for one year. I think the Schauinsland part will be very hard, as there are lots of information.

Uwe Ludwig: So weit ich weiss, ist der Fundort bei Antonsthal eine kleine Schachthalde im Feld Unverhofft Glück, nicht identisch mit der Helvinfundstelle an der Achte. Weisst du da näheres drüber. Muss mal meine Fotos durchsuchen, da sollte noch irgendwo einer sein.
(As far as I know, the place with the Pyros has been a small stockpile of a shaft of the Unverhofft Glück Mine, not identical with the helvite locality Unverhofft Glück an der Achte more to the east. Have to look through my photos, there should be one of a specimen from there.
