Jan 2012Re: Lazurite Crystal SystemReply from Richard Felicioni in Techniques for Collectors.
I have added three more photos. Let me know if there is a view I am missing. Thanks again for your input.
Jan 2012Re: Lazurite Crystal SystemReply from Richard Felicioni in Techniques for Collectors.
Wow, thank you. Yes it is a face. There is also a slightly thicker long thin face on the the opposite side. I will take a few additional photos and post them later tonight.
Jan 2012Lazurite Crystal SystemPosted by Richard Felicioni in Techniques for Collectors.
I am trying to determine the geometric shape of this Lazurite. I know Lazurite has a Isometric (Cubic) system, but I am having a hard time seeing this shape in this specimen. The Lazurite crystal looks to be a Tetragonal Trapezohedron (Photo: Tetragonal Trapezohedron). I have attached two pictures ...
Feb 2012Re: PLEASE READ before answering requests for help!Reply from Richard Felicioni in Identity Help.
In the Identity Help forum, the thread labeled (Mineral Identification (How to - PLEASE READ before posting questions) gives good direction on how to better your changes of getting specimens identified. Could you create a form for posting identity help threads where some of the questions must be ...
Mar 2011Re: LazuriteReply from Richard Felicioni in Minerals.
I received the Lazurite after Plagioclase today. I attached a few pictures below. Picture 3 shows the translucency of the specimen. I would appreciate learning any new information about this pseudomorph as it becomes available.
Mar 2011Re: LazuriteReply from Richard Felicioni in Minerals.
Thanks Rob, that's much more information than I had before. I will read up on the minerals you have mentioned. The specimen I have coming does have white, dark blue and translucent lighter blue areas. The seller described it as having a "Delft" look.
Mar 2011LazuritePosted by Richard Felicioni in Minerals.
I just purchased a Lazurite pseudomorph after Plagioclase. I understand there is still some testing being done. Does anyone have any details? I haven't received the specimen yet, but when I do I'll post a picture.
Feb 2011Re: Afghanistan Location?Reply from Richard Felicioni in General.
Thanks again Rob, I appreciate the information about the area.
Feb 2011Re: Afghanistan Location?Reply from Richard Felicioni in General.
Thanks Rob, I was able to get some additional information on the location - Kiran / Kokcha Valley / Badakhshan / Afghanistan.
Feb 2011Afghanistan Location?Posted by Richard Felicioni in General.
Has anyone heard of badgshan in Afghanistan? Is this locality known for Sodalite?
May 2010Re: Copper included QuartzReply from Richard Felicioni in General.
Rusty, thanks for your input. If I had a better macro camera you would be able to see the copper. I am confident the item description from the seller is correct. I checked and the seller is a member of Mindat and appears to be an experienced rockhound.
May 2010Re: Copper included QuartzReply from Richard Felicioni in General.
Thanks Alfredo, I will try that when I get the opportunity. My neighbor seems to have misplaced his metal detector.
May 2010Re: Copper included QuartzReply from Richard Felicioni in General.
If you agree that the inclusion is copper, wouldn't it make more sense for the red coating to be Cuprite (Copper Oxide) than Hematite (Iron Oxide)?
May 2010Re: Copper included QuartzReply from Richard Felicioni in General.
Here's two more photos in sunlight. I feel kinda stupid for thinking there was a fluorescence going on in this specimen, but I am still amazed how different it looks when viewed in different lighting. If anyone would like me to try something different with this Quartz please let me know. Thanks ...
May 2010Re: Copper included QuartzReply from Richard Felicioni in General.
Here's two photos in sunlight.
May 2010Re: Copper included QuartzReply from Richard Felicioni in General.
Debbie, I did a quick google search on "Cuprite in Africa" and I found the "Field Guide to Rocks & Minerals of Southern Africa by Bruce Cairncross". In the viewable pages it states Cuprite has been found at Messina and other locations in Southern Africa. I am not sure way there is a difference in ...
May 2010Re: Copper included QuartzReply from Richard Felicioni in General.
Alfredo, here are photos in sugar water. I added one tablespoon to one cup of water. This time I was able to add all three photos. Must have to do with the photo size.
May 2010Re: Copper included QuartzReply from Richard Felicioni in General.
And here is the third photo.
May 2010Re: Copper included QuartzReply from Richard Felicioni in General.
Can't seem to attach more than one photo per message. The timer just spins endlessly. So I will attach one photo per message. Here is the second photo.
May 2010Re: Copper included QuartzReply from Richard Felicioni in General.
As Ron said no change after light exposure. I must of changed viewing angle or how close I held to the light or something. The photos this morning show no change.
May 2010Re: Copper included QuartzReply from Richard Felicioni in General.
Thanks Debbie for the info. Looks like I have some work to do. I had no reason to doubt the seller and I felt he was reliable. Since it now appears this is a lot more complicated than I initially thought it would be, I will also take a set of photos that more clearly show the inclusion. I have ...
May 2010Re: Copper included QuartzReply from Richard Felicioni in General.
Paul, I don't mind you doubting. I didn't take the picture to prove that the circled inclusion is Copper, but to clarify what I was trying to explain. I will try to obtain a good picture of just this inclusion tomorrow while I am taking the other photos. My camera is not the greatest macro camera, ...
May 2010Re: Copper included QuartzReply from Richard Felicioni in General.
Thanks Rob and Jasun, I am going to try to photograph the specimen to determine if there is anything more than just reflection going on. My plan is: 1. Store the Quartz in the dark overnight. 2. Setup photo area with a overhead light source. 3. Photo the Quartz immediately after removing it ...
May 2010Re: Copper included QuartzReply from Richard Felicioni in General.
This specimen is from Messina Mine in South Africa. The description also states there is Cuprite included in the quartz, maybe this is adding to the coloring effect I am seeing.
May 2010Re: Copper included QuartzReply from Richard Felicioni in General.
Ok, I have attached a photo to try and explain what I believe I see. I need to recharge my camera batteries, but I will try to figure out a way to take a series of photos showing the Quartz with it's clear tip and than colored. You can see this color in the Quartz point in this photo. This color ...
May 2010Re: Copper included QuartzReply from Richard Felicioni in General.
Thanks, the quartz is copper included, you can see copper pieces in the quartz. But your answer got me thinking that the light is reflecting off the copper giving the quartz the appearance of being coppery orange colored. I am not sure why when I first put it under the light the quartz appears ...
May 2010Copper included QuartzPosted by Richard Felicioni in General.
I have a piece of quartz which is copper included, the quartz turns coppery orange when under light. When the light source is removed it fades back to clear. Does this mean the Quartz is fluorescent? If so, is it the copper that is causing the fluorescence? Any input is appreciated.

Steve Hardinger Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Every specimen I have ever purchased is a > pseudomorph: money replaced by mineral. I agree with Steve. How about Shattuckite after Cuprite and Shattuckite after Plancheite. I also like Plancheite after Dioptase.
Mar 2010Re: Purchased as a Mystery StoneReply from Richard Felicioni in Identity Help.
Thank you, I really didn't expect to be able to identify it. That makes it a much more interesting specimen. Thanks again.
Mar 2010Re: Purchased as a Mystery StoneReply from Richard Felicioni in Identity Help.
That would be cool. Any ideas about the base silvery gray material. I think it's metal of some type. I just checked and it is not magnetic.
Mar 2010Re: Purchased as a Mystery StoneReply from Richard Felicioni in Identity Help.
Here are the other three photos. Thanks for any input your able to supply.
Mar 2010Purchased as a Mystery StonePosted by Richard Felicioni in Identity Help.
I purchased this as a Mystery Stone, it was reported to have come from the estate sale of Chuck Simmons (collector from Tucson, Arizona). I would be interested in opinions on what it is and where it could of come from. 1. What "luster" does the mineral have? The main material is Metallic with ...

Nov 2014Re: Azurite, Namibia, TsumebReply from Richard Felicioni to an article.
Hi Rock, I think the following picture by Kristalle and Crystal Classics should be considered for the article. I think WOW when I look at it. I tried to add the link as you did in my Wulfenite post, I hope I did it correctly. www.mindat.org Please let me know if my suggestions are helping or ...

Thanks Rock, I appreciate you considering it. The Blue Wulfenite really fascinates me.
Apr 2014Re: WulfeniteReply from Richard Felicioni to an article.
Hey Rock, any place in your article for Jason McAvoy's Blue Wulfenite photo. It's at the below location on Mindat. http://www.mindat.org/photo-194094.html I haven't researched blue Wulfenite, but I am pretty sure I will in the future.
Jan 2019Re: Why isn't my edit and/or photo listed?Reply from Richard Felicioni in Improving Mindat.org.
I apologize. I misunderstood the use of this thread. I do appreciate you taking the time to answer my question and I respect your input. b) I am using an older 2.1mp camera and I didn't realize the photo's were grainy. c) I actually purchased this specimen from a company in India and the only ...

Mar 2009Re: Photo type questionReply from Richard Felicioni in General.
I like the idea of a separate section for polished stones. I have always valued the examples of the natural forms, but can also appreciate the beauty of the polished specimen. I would prefer not to have to review hundreds of polished specimens to view the natural examples though. Thanks for letting ...
