Andalusite in the Appleton Ridge Formation

06447730014962440112960.jpg
Appleton Ridge, Appleton, Knox County, Maine, USA

Interlayering of andalusite bearing and quartzo-feldspathic beds of the Appleton Ridge formation. The compositional differences in these beds is due to the difference in the protolith. The darker andalusite-bearing beds are interpreted to be metamorphosed pelitic sediments, like shale. Whereas the light gray beds without andalusite were most likely sandstones, free of aluminum-bearing sediment. The lightest colored layer in the top of the photo is an intrusive igneous rock, emplaced some time after the bedding had already developed.

Outcrop is near Canary Lane off of Sennebec Road in Appleton. Property is private and requires permission before visiting.
