Iron Mine Hill quarry, Cumberland, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA

Wintertime view of the top of the hill at the outcrop site. Photo shows the rock worn smooth as a result of glacial scouring. Glacial striations are visible on the rock indicating direction of travel of the glacier. This rock is an example of a Roche Moutonnée, a rock shaped by glacial action. Location off of Elder Ballou Meeting House Road, Cumberland, RI. 41.8996207,-71.4057196.

A former Fe mine located 2.3 km (1.4 miles) WNW of Cumberland and 4.8 km (3.0 miles) E of Woonsocket.

Type locality for cumberlandite (titaniferous magnetite melatroctolite).
Intruded into the Late Proterozoic Blackstone Group between 620 and 370 mya. Formed by gravitational settling of olivine, titaniferous magnetite and cumulophyric plagioclase-olivine aggregates from an anorthositic gabbro magma.
