Subhedral columbite-(Fe) crystal 7.5 cm tall, with a small amount of samarskite-(Y) shown in the child photo. During recent collecting, these two minerals are commonly found grown against each other, but the columbite probably went unrecognized in older specimens such as this one, which was simple labeled as coming from Glastonbury. The size, form, luster, hematite/clay/mica coating and association with samarskite is characteristic of Spinelli. Former Joe Cilen specimen, Harold Moritz collection.

Crude samarskite-(Y) crystal, 2 cm long on a columbite-(Fe) crystal. The metamict samarskite is distinguished by its black, glassy, obsidian-like conchoidal fracture surface at its left endand generally smoother surface. The surrounding columbite is rougher with a brighter luster. Former Joe Cilen specimen, Harold Moritz collection.

Subhedral columbite-(Fe) crystal with a small amount of samarskite-(Y) shown in the child photo. During collecting 2008-2012, these two minerals are commonly found grown against each other, but the columbite probably went unrecognized in older specimens such as this one, which was simple labeled as coming from Glastonbury. The size, form, luster, hematite/clay/mica coating (cleaned off in this photo - see child photo for a before image) and association with samarskite is characteristic of Spinelli. Former Joe Cilen specimen, Harold Moritz collection.
