Amethyst and epidote. Mario Pauwels collection, Joaquim Callén photo, Ex Wayne Thompson Collection. Larger amethyst 'plate' of multiple dozens of isolated and double terminated amethyst crystals. The crystals have a deep saturated purple 'blush' termination and the presence of small green epidote crystals between the amethysts adds so much more extra contrast to this outstanding piece. This specimen was collected by Wayne Thompson in 1989 during his mining activities at Vera Cruz, and the specimen was in his collection until I bought it from Wayne in 1994. And It is not that easy to reach this famous Mexican amethyst locality. It requires for the miners a six-hour mule or horse ride from the nearest village to reach the remote locality in the steep mountain valleys of Piedra Parada in which these Amethyst crystals can be found. A true challenge with this fragile material.
