Knappenwand, Knappenwand area, Neukirchen am Großvenediger, Zell am See District, Salzburg, Austria

Since the discovery, in 1865, of epidote from Knappenwand, the locality has been ranked as producing the finest specimens on a worldwide basis. This cluster shows why: The largest crystal measures 7 cm in length, and it and all the smaller crystals attached, many of which are doubly terminated, exhibit brilliant luster and very good translucence. ...

Austrian epidotes still set the standard for the species, to the minds of most established collectors. This specimen is an elegant old classic with more impact than most, and has great balance as a display specimen. Four epidote crystals, to 5.5 cm in length, exhibit fine parallel growth. The crystals are highly lustrous but so thick that they ...

Knappenwand, Knappenwand area, Neukirchen am Großvenediger, Zell am See District, Salzburg, Austria

A superb example of one of the great European classics. Epidotes from Austria were one of the must-haves of the era of the birth of mineralogy, and all old museums have these in larger sizes. However, what you seldom see are competition-worthy thumbnail-sized examples such as this one. It's very sharp, pristine, and has a deep olive green color ...
