It's up to the individual manager to approve or not approve a photo for site-wide display or for personal gallery only.
In this case it might have happened accidentally (approval involves clicking on different buttons etc...).

When a photo is uploaded it goes into a file for the managers to approve and it will stay there till it is approved, deleted or places in the users only gallery. Often what happens is that one of us managers will look at the photo and realize that they just don't know enough about that mineral or locality to make an informed judgment about what should be done with that photo. So we just leave it for another manager that hopefully knows more about that mineral or locality than we do to make a proper disposition of the image and or perhaps send out a complaint email. Sometimes no manager feels confident about making a decision about the image so there it sits till a manager takes it upon himself to do enough research on the image to make a decision. Recently we have started an "experts" list where images of particular minerals or from particular localities are automatically referred to a species or locality expert for disposition. Even then there can be delays. I signed up to be an expert on specimens from India, Brazil, Chile, Peru etc. but find that there is a lot of stuff from those places that I need to research because there are a lot of specimens from those places that I don't know about and that I need the help of others that know more about specimens from those localities than I. But then a little thing like the Tucson show gets in the way and that subtracts about a month of my time away from working on Mindat, so that may mean that those images may sit for a month till I can get back to them and do the needful. Similar situations may apply with other managers and the poor image may get stuck for a month or more in the pending file. I don't know what exactly we can do to improve the situation. Perhaps if we cut the salaries of the managers in half they will get the message and work harder on mindat.

During the past few days I have posted a number of site and mineral photographs for a Nevada calcite location with the thought that I could clarify information about it for the record. I started by adding a sub locality to this existing locality:
Crofoot-Lewis mine (Hycroft mine), Sulfur District, Humboldt Co., Nevada, USA
There was one posted photograph of a mineral specimen (sulfur) from this locality, no site photographs. I added sub locality “Devil’s Corral” and then, when this sub locality appeared on the locality list for ‘calcite, Humboldt Co., Nevada,” I began to add photographs under that (sub) locality heading. I added 4 modern site photographs, then three mineral photographs and then 2 historic site photographs. All of the photos showed up immediately in my User’s Photo Gallery with the proper (new sub locality Devil’s Corral) location indicated. And a short time later the mineral photos showed up under “calcite, Nevada.” But, when you go to that (sub) location on the list for calcite, Humboldt Co., Nevada, none of the pictures are there. The three photos of mineral specimens did show up on the Crofoot-Lewis mine (Hycroft mine)….. locality, but no site photos.
I have number of additional photos to add but wanted to find out why things were not showing up on the “New Photos Today,” (there have been no queries about photos submitted) and why only mineral photos, no site photos, were showing up under the other location headings. And, why all of the photos do not show up when searching the correct (sub) location that is now posted.
Note that there have been for some time several photos posted to a location called “Devil’s Corral, Black Rock Desert area, Humboldt Co., Nevada, USA” of specimens that are from the Devil’s Corral, Crofoot-Lewis mine (Hycroft mine) location. They were collected and distributed by someone I took to the location some years ago. If you search “calcite, Devil’s Corral,” you will come up with two locations. My recently added sub locality with no photos and the old “Black Rock Desert” locality that shows 5 mineral photos. Those photos should be moved to the new (sub) locality and the old Black Rock Desert location deleted.
Cheers!
Steve

"but have been wondering ever since how one becomes a "full member" of Mindat with cache-clearing privileges." It is when the managers feel that you have a good working knowledge of how data entry for mindat works and your entries no longer require double checking.

From the personal information you list on you home page you could very well soon become a level two person here on mindat or possibly a manager. I thought the pictures you post of stuff from various Illinois and Iowa quarries were quite interesting and your work on the 25 year index of the Mineralogical Record indicates that you must know your stuff. I have used that index a fair amount, especially in regard to creating stubs of A minerals for the Best Minerals project here on Mindat. Do you know if there is any movement to creating an online index for the Min Record for all years?
One of the things that the management here on mindat has increasingly come to value if people can get along with others and can with good humor over look and work with the minor idiosyncrasies of others. I as a manager have often felt that I am, or at least have been right on the border, of what the other managers can tolerate. If nothing else I hope I have learned to be a little more tolerant of others. I suspect that this is the kind of thing that comes naturally to politicians. The key to being accepted here as a level two person or a manager is that a person besides the above, is in inclination to do work here on mindat beyond uploading a few images and participating on the message board. Participating in the message board is important because it allows the managers to see how you interact with other's especially newbes who don't know much. You get points for being nice to them and trying your best to help them and not make them feel foolish. The other thing that managers worry about is that you know your way around the site and when you enter or correct localities and or images you do it correctly and don't make many errors, in other words you don't screw things up. If for instance you thought you could work on cleaning up localities in Illinois and or Iowa (they may or may not require a lot of work) this is something that would be appreciated. If you decided to to this kind of work you should first give us some idea of what needs to be done and then coordinate your work with Chet Lemanski who is our locality guru. Also you might like to do a few Best Minerals articles. This is the subsection of Mindat that is given over to my care and the other moderators of this part of the message board. You complete a couple of those and Ill make you a moderator and you can create your own articles there from scratch.
Is there any particular part of mindat that you think you would like to work on? How would you like to see mindat change? What shortcomings do you find here on mindat?

Can you tell me where your quartz was from and what it looked like? There are a lot of quartz specimens pictured here on mindat.
