LocalitiesPope siding, Bertram, Imperial County, California, USA
6th Aug 2014 20:38 UTCWilliam W. Besse Expert
The references given are:
Tucker, W. Burling (1924a), Imperial, Inyo, Kern, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino,
San Diego, Ventura Counties: California Mining Bureau. Report 20: 87.
Murdoch, Joseph & Robert W. Webb (1966), Minerals of California, Centennial Volume
(1866-1966): California Division Mines & Geology Bulletin 189: 267.
Let me start with Murdoch (1966). He does mention Pope Siding. Ah, but he did not have direct research of the area, so he got the information from Tucker (1924), including the locality location. This is just another case where not using the primary reference allows bad information to be passed on.
Tucker (downloadable from archive.org) discusses the Bertram Mine but has no mention of Pope Siding. Searching the whole book found no mention of it either. So where did Murdoch get the information?
Pope siding does exist. It is at 33.365027, -115.723683 (NE1/4 sec. 28, T9S, R12E, SBM), which is about 0.5 miles ENE of Bombay Beach, and on the north side of the railroad tracks along the north side of California State Route 111. This is not to say the locality is there but that is what it is named for. There are a series of washes that run toward the Salton Sea from the NW going through the Pope siding area. I have a gypsum crystal labelled as Pope siding that Rock Currier gave me in hopes of my finding the collecting area. Tried once but with no success.
