Field CollectingProspect Park and New street Quarries, New Jersey Help

27th Jul 2016 08:51 UTCRobert Darabos

I was thinking of making a trip up to New Jersey to the Lower New Street Quarries, Upper New Street Quarries, and/or Prospect Park Quarries area.

I'm unsure which of these even operate still for collectors and the internet wasn't helping much.

I also can't find an actual address for any of them.

Can any one help me out?

Thanks.

Hi Robert,

Much information can be found on the mindat locality pages, see

The Prospect Park Quarry is closed to collecting. It's private property and in the midst of a construction project. The Upper New Street Quarry is open to the public at this time. It is on New Street in Paterson, NJ, near Route 80 and off Rifle Camp Road. The Lower New Street Quarry(also open to the public) is across the street and down in the woods right next to Rt.80. Both places have been HEAVILY collected in the past few years, so be prepared to break a lot of very hard rock to get any nice specimens, although they can be found with hard work. You will need a sledgehammer, big chisels and prybars and the appropriate safety equipment. There is a small parking area right in front of the quarry fence on New Street. Expect to meet other collectors there as the place gets pretty busy on weekends.

As far as I'm aware of, only New Street is open for collecting. They rest have all been reclaimed in one form or another. I'm sure someone that lives closer to the sites with better knowledge than myself will chime in, but that's the word I have from locals in that area.

Listen to Gary Moldovany, he hit the chisel in the vug.
