General2" X 2" X 2" "Perky" Boxes?

5th Feb 2010 17:36 UTCDan Fountain

I'm looking for a source in the US for 2" X 2" X 2" "perky" style hinged plastic boxes. I've got a lot of specimens that are too big for 1-1/4" perky boxes, but look lost in the 2-1/2" miniature boxes. Any other good alternatives?

Thanks.

I don't believe anyone makes a 2x2x2 perky box; the sizes I have seen are the 1 1/4 inch and 2 1/2 inch cubes.

This vendor also sells 2x2x2 boxes:

PB200 Plastic Case 2x2x2" 1.60 each, 12 for $16.00

Althor seems cheaper! I used to buy from Arizona Mineral Company, but they don't carry display boxes anymore. I'm going to contact Althor.

Thanks! I bought some of their boxes and got excellent service from them.

Hi,

Regardig H-40DR, I have bought this product from Althor, from whom I get most of my Perky Boxes and recommend highly! Just an FYI that the black base for this model is fairly high - 1 inch in height base, and 1 inch clear top. Most perky box sizes do also have a smaller base to top height ratio available, but this is not one of them (although perhaps if enough of us asked ??) It works well for pieces with thick matrix or those which can be arranged so that the best viewing angle is to the top side.

Best,

Stephan

Hello

Can anyone refer me to a company and or web site in the USA that would offer 3 inch cubed perky style boxes made of plastic?

Thank you,

Ric

Hi,

Can somebody who buys from Althor provide me with the model number for the "standard" 'Perky' thumbnail size boxes please? Of course I am looking for the box that has the smaller base to height ratio, the standard, 'official sized' boxes. :)

Thank you very much.

If you are looking for large quantity Althor is good but unless they have changed it, there is a $100 minimum. David Shannon Minerals in Mesa, AZ has them. They don't have a website but the phone number is 408-985 0557. I have an old price list but the price was $8.70 for 10 with styrofoam. I think the price is the same. I just ordered more but forgot to ask the price. They also have a lot of other supplies. Call and ask for a price list.

Hi,

I actually have a few boxes from Shannon and Sons, and a few from Althor. Although the dimensions are the same on print, the Althor boxes interior dimensions are wider by about 1/64th of an inch. Placing labels in the Althor boxes actually fit better, and do not need to be bent backwards a bunch of times. I can tell dealers who use the other boxes, because their labels are always cut smaller, and a bit uneven to make up for the difference in interior space.

And it is my experience that the hinge mechanism and the tightness of the closed box bodes better for Althor. Not to mention the fact that they are located in CT, which is a stone's throw from where I am in Manhattan compared to AZ. :)

I plan on buying over a thousand anyhow. But thanks for the information.

Hi Mathew, Shannon and Sons is a different company than David Shannon Minerals. They have different boxes. David Shannon Minerals make their own I think. I haven't had any problems with them. I haven't ordered from Althor in a while but I seem to remember that the black bottom on the 2x2x2 was much thicker but maybe they have new ones.

20th May 2010 00:15 UTCMatthew Langlois

Ahh, I see it is indeed a different company. So much for critical reading skills. lol :) I'll check them out, but the size I am looking for is the standard 'perky' sized box. Good luck on the 2x2x2. Heard from this thread that the bottoms on those are larger in proportion to the top.

Looking for Perky Boxes and please advise if you liked the boxes you received from Althor. What is the size of

the black base? Do they have the white foam? Thanks for your comments.

Hi Patrick - is this with the Styrofoam inserts?

Jonelle - those are not the "classic" Perky boxes.

Don, when was the last time you bought boxes from David Shannon minerals? I bought TN boxes by the gross (624) years ago when they made them in Arizona. The late wonderful Dave Shannon told me his machine cot $10,000 U.S. back then. I thought they were out of business. Also, as mentioned earlier, Althor does have a minimum on their orders.

Just a note to explain moderation rules here...

When a person joins the site to make one single post to the forums, and that post is a commercial recommendation for a supplier complete with telephone numbers and URLs I have to treat it as a spam message and remove it even if the intent of the message was entirely honorable.

If a regular member who has a large number of posts to their name posts exactly the same message it would be treated differently.

25th Oct 2015 15:18 UTCTony Albini

Dan, the easiest way to find "suppliers of Perky boxes for minerals" is to Google the phrase you see here. Each supplier has pluses and minuses so I do not recommend anyone in particular because what worked for me may not be what you want. Usually they have an email or phone number on their site to contact them.

This should give you the widest selection of what you are looking for.

Just remember you get what you pay for.... this is very true regarding perky's. I've bought both inexpensive and higher priced, and the cheaper ones were significantly of less quality.

Good luck.

I ran across this thread while trying to find out just what a Perky Box actually is. Was that an actual brand name, not the style itself? I never did find much more info online. In fact, I can NEVER find info online for ANYTHING, it seems! :-X I guess I am just not "mainstream" enough :-D

10th Nov 2015 23:08 UTCDoug Daniels

It wasn't really a brand name, but was named after a prominent thumbnail collector/dealer named ___ Perkins (I forget his first name off hand), back in the ancient 1960's. The specific box he used came to be known as a Perky box. Other similar boxes, of larger sizes also picked up the name, with size qualifications. (That's my story of it, and I'm sticking to it.... until proven wrong)

11th Nov 2015 05:18 UTCHal Prior

Willard J. "Perk" Perkin, is credited as the creator of the 1.25-inch cubic thumbnail display box that bears his nickname. Many years ago he gave me the name of a company to buy them from - thus I suspect he was not the creator, only one of the first to use them. David Shannon later purchased expensive molds to make a similar size box that did not have ridges on the top edges - I thought they were sharper looking.

11th Nov 2015 12:11 UTCDana Slaughter 🌟 Expert

Hal is right--the late David Shannon did not like the unsightly ridges on the boxes and designed a better box. His boxes became the standard for many years. I'm not sure if Colleen Shannon is selling supplies or not (she no longer sells minerals) but Michael Shannon of Shannon and Sons Minerals has continued the tradition and his boxes are the best around in my opinion. The best price too---and you can get them with styrofoam inserts AND white cardboard inserts to give the styrofoam a whiter appearance. The difference is subtle but the cardboard inserts do improve the overall display.

Dan and Matt .....have used Althor for over 25 years , they sell quality products.....the bases are some what higher but they work fine in most instances....friction fit boxes are great too....have used them for thumbnail Odessa/Canyon Diablo/Cielo irons.....foam inserts do discolor somewhat after many years.....still quality products.....john

Althor perky boxes have improved with time and they are much better than they were just 2 years ago but they are not perfect. The big advantage I find to Althor boxes, besides being made in the USA, is that the plastic is of better quality, It does not change color ( become purple) as often as other manufactures, and has a more uniform thickness. The last shipment I had was the best thus far with fewer scratches and better fitting lids than in the past. I would say this last shipment contained what I would call 80% perfect boxes, 10% near perfect, and the remainder usable but with many scratches or imperfections. That compares with only 20% perfect in the shipment before that.

11th Nov 2015 22:33 UTCJonelle DeFelice

WOW! Geesh, and here I thought everyone used generic displays, for things like jewelry, small hobby part storage, etc. Glad I asked! ;-)
