6th Mar 2015 20:16 UTCVolker Betz 🌟 Expert

Hi,

I uploded a video.

You need to load your video to a place like youtube,, then provide a link to it.

Videos are one of the things that Jolyon added support for (along with the rotating of specimens) with the new version.

The videos I've uploaded work fine.

You upload as you would a photo, but the video needs to be in mp4 format AND the extension must read as such...BTW when uploading put in category "OTHER PHOTO".

cheers

John

NB such vids are not applied to your photo count

Videos can be in any category including minerals. It seems that this particular video did not upload correctly for some reason.

OOPS, thanks for that correction Jolyon

Nothing went wrong during video upload.

The videos of Volker and John are both on Mindat, I can download and view them.

Either by checking the URL in the page's source code or by using my Firefox "Ant Video Downloader" plugin that detects the presence of a video and offers to download it for me.

(I checked Volker's video a few days ago, it seems to have been replaced by a photo in the meantime).

It's possible the problems are specific to Firefox:

The buttons are responsive (java script works).

Firefox does support HTML5 video (as used here).

But due to licensing and patenting issues Firefox does not yet decode H.264 and AAC natively.

Chrome and Internet Exploder, and I guess Safari, too, do support playback of H.264.

MP4 is only a container format for video and audio content, commonly encoded as H.264 (also known as AVC) for video and AAC for audio.

Accordingly, Firefox users are still left out in the cold, unless they add and utilize operating system specific extensions for Firefox to play the video through them - a topic which I need to get a bit more into now :-/

So, if you have problems playing the video, which browser and operating system do you use?

It doesn't play back in Chrome

My mistake, I will have to check chrome myself.

Actually, now that I think of it, I remember that the video that you initially uploaded some time ago did play in my browsers. Strange.

But I guess nothing in the code has been changed?

11th Mar 2015 01:06 UTCAmir C. Akhavan Expert

I've checked it.

First time I used chrome ... I had to accept a EULA... brrrrr... :-D

Anyway:

Chrome HTML5 video with MP4/H.264/AAC (John Montgomery's video) works on my box.
