Improving Mindat.orgNunavut

Mindat incorrectly lists in the locality hierarchy "Nunavut Territory".

The formal and correct name is Nunavut.

It is a territory, the way California is a state, but we do not say "California State" on specimen localities.

Thanks John. When Nunavut becomes a province we'll drop the Territory, just like Ontario or Quebec. Until then people can keep their labels shorter without the Territory. Mindat Localities are often too long for labels.

Hi John and Rob. I think the name "Nunavut Territory" is both respectful and reflective of modern amalgamation in Canada. Indigenous people of Canada reside in the vast region of Nunavut, Canada. Which I think only became familiar to Canadians in the last ten years. Canadians I think are still adjusting to Nunavut as a region of northern Canada. I'm sure Mindat and its administrators mean to represent this Canadian region and its mineral localities both descriptively and respectfully. As for the minerals that could be found in this region that has not been documented, I'm sure many fine collector's specimens will eventually find their way to the online mineral stage of Mindat.

Best wishes to my friends on Mindat.

I think John is correct (cf. wikipedia).

As for the three territories in Canada, we also use Yukon, Canada, not "Yukon Territory, Canada".

Northwest Territories is a defined name.

Uwe if you want change it, go right ahead. I'll have Nunavut!!!:-D

Although the Yukon is a territory it is called THE Yukon in conversation and writing. The Yukon will probably be a province before Nunavut is.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I think Yukon, NWT, and Nunavut are by definition territories (although conveniently, Wikipedia leads to a dead link) which have different administrative status than provinces. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provinces_and_territories_of_Canada#Territories

This link supports my point that it should be labeled simply as "Nunavut".

See the section labeled "Territories".

Hi

I note that the Canadian Government in its Natural Resources Canada, under geographical names simply lists it as Nunavut. And indicates it is a territory.

It seems to be in other Government agencies that they just use Nunavut. Perhaps that is in fact how it should be.

Canada also still has Yukon Territory and North West Territories according to various Government sites. So I would also change Yukon to Yukon Territory.

In my view it should be changed but hey I'm not a Canadian so what would I know.;-)

Cheers

Keith

The People of the Yukon stopped using Territory a number of years ago. It is just "Yukon". It is a territory, not a province. Another (much newer) territory is Nunavut. Just called Nunavut. The Northwest Territories is/was actually a group of territories (of which Yukon was formerly one, years ago) that has the proper designation of the Northwest Territories. There are relic referrals to old names out there everywhere. Old habits die hard!

Thats quite new to me that there is no "Yukon Territory" but Yukon. Something must have changed in geography since my atlas-staring in the late high school :-S

Interestingly enough, Google Earth lists them as "Yukon Territory", "Northwest Territories", and simply "Nunavut".

As a thirty-year career geologist with the aforementioned Natural Resources Canada, working almost exclusively in the region that became Nunavut well before it was even thought of, I can assure everyone....it's just "Nunavut".
