Improving Mindat.orgGrand Reef mine, Graham County, Arizona

1st Aug 2006 06:16 UTCWilliam W. Besse Expert

Sometime age I sent in a correction to the reference on the location of the Grand Reef mine, Graham County, Arizona, and associated minerals. I have not heard back or seen any changes. Is there somebody specific I should direct this to?

1st Aug 2006 13:38 UTCUwe Kolitsch Manager

I could not find earlier postings of you on this mine (when searching either for "Grand Reef" or author="William w Besse").

Thanks for your reply.

I sent the correction/update as an email to joylon@mindat.org. Rock Currier suggested to me that it would be better to post and see if there was a specific person to send to.

Email is below:

Hello,

Saw on eBay a linarite for sale referencing the Grand Reef mine in the Pinaleño Mts. I told the dealer it was incorrect and he said he got the information from MinDAT. Don't know what reference you used for this but it is incorrect. It should be the Santa Teresa Mountains. The Pinaleño Mts are to the southeast of the Santa Teresa Mountains and there is a significant pass between the two. If you look at Topozone you can clearly see the difference(http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=12&n=3638849.00007555&e=563454.000000011&datum=nad83). It is also stated that way in the articles I could find.

Additional minerals not listed on your page: antlerite, beaverite, chalcanthite, chrysocolla, cuprite, goethite, goslarite, illite, malachite, montmorillonite, wulfenite.

Bill

William,

What about the rest of the nearby localities (see: http://www.mindat.org/lsearch.php?loc=pinaleno) ?

I corrected the Grand Reef Mine. I also need to know about the remaining nearby localities since my sources indicated the Pinaleño Mts., which are in fact, nearby, if not totally correct.

Which other mines? Dogwater is just a short hop from GR and in same moutain range. Most of the rest of the Aravaipa district is too, but not all. If you give me a list I will sort them out for you.

Here is what I have so far:

Grand Reef mine 32° 52' 57"N, 110° 19' 03"W

Laurel Canyon in the Santa Teresa mountains

Dog Water mine (prefered name) 32° 52' 21"N, 110° 18' 53"W

in small side canyon of Laurel Canyon in the Santa Teresa mountains

Tenstrike mine (prefered name) 32° 54' 21"N, 110° 19' 31"W and Aravaipa Mine (Aravaipa claim),

3 km N of NNW of Grand Reef mine on western slope of Santa Teresa mountains

Sin Fin mine (prefered name) 32° 58' 40"N, 110° 20' 26"W and Head Center mine 32° 58' 41"N, 110° 20' 22"W

3 km NNE of Arivaipa (site) on opposing sides of Williamson Canyon, north off Arizona Gulch, in the Santa Teresa mountains

Cobre Grande mine 32° 58' 34"N, 110° 17' 36"W

on Cobre Grande Mountain in the Santa Teresa mountains

No. 1 Mine (No. 1 & No.2 claims), Arizona Gulch, Aravaipa 32° 57' 22"N, 110° 21' 36"W

just west of Arivaipa (site) in Arizona Gulch, in the Santa Teresa mountains

Arizona Mine (Arizona claim) - not sure exactly which shaft but think it is 32° 58' 09"N, 110° 21' 37"W. In any case it would be: 2 km N of Arivaipa (site), N off Williamson Canyon, north off Arizona Gulch, in the Santa Teresa mountains

Beginning to think reference to Pinaleño Mts should be totally wiped. Even from looking at what mindat has says that probably all should be listed as Santa Teresa mountains, but not familiar with all of them and will research my library.

Don't know if I will get more done this week. Off to San Francisco show for weekend.

I'll be updating these today sometime. Thanks!

Chet,

Have not forgotten this but every time I look I tear some more hair out trying to make sense of the differing geography. A lot of it seems to date back to Ross ,1925 , Aravaipa and Stanley Mining Districts... He used Imperial Hill and Turnbull Mountains. Both terms are no longer in use by GNIS. Imperial Hill is now Imperial Mountain. Turnbull Mountains, the area north of and including Cobre Grande Mountain, is considered part of the Santa Teresa Mountains. Still trying to arrange this properly.

Here are a few specifics:

Friend Mine 33° 02' 13"N, 110° 23' 19"W, on slope of Little Stanley Butte and 1km N of it’s peak. Was labelled as Rawhide Mtn but I think that is because it is on the Rawhide Mtn quadrangle, so really it is Stanley Butte area.

Arizona Mine (Arizona claim, Arizona shaft), Aravaipa, Aravaipa District, Santa Teresa Mts, Graham Co., Arizona, USA, 32° 58.14'N, 110° 21.57'W (pin-pointed on Topozone.com). Reference: Denton, T.C. (1947), Aravaipa lead-zinc deposits, Graham County, Ariz., US Bur. Mines Rept. Investigation 4007: figure 2

Iron Cap Mine, Aravaipa, Aravaipa District, Santa Teresa Mts, Graham Co., Arizona, USA, 32° 58' 43"N, 110° 19' 45"W, 1.5km N of Landsman Camp.

Santa Teresa Mine, Aravaipa, Aravaipa District, Santa Teresa Mts, Graham Co., Arizona, USA. The Range and Township place it roughly 1km NW of Aravaipa on a ridge to the W of Williamson Canyon.

For "Head Center Mine, Williamson Canyon, Cobre Grande Mountain, Aravaipa, Aravaipa District, Santa Teresa Mts, Graham Co., Arizona, USA" get rid of the "Cobre Grande Mountain" as it is 2 miles away and misleading.

Thanks Bill! I just returned from the Franklin, NJ, show and I am more than a bit tired. I'll fix these new data either later tonight or tomorrow. I appreciate the continuing input. Arizona will be "complete" sometime in the future (I hope).
