It is interesting to note that the above list of place name abbreviations are predominately of English origin. It is probably understandable since much of the terminology used in the English speaking world was first developed in England and carried to the rest of the world by the Cousin Jacks of Cornwall and other English mining districts. The list speaks strongly of the antiquity of many of the terms used in the dictionary.
