The Wauneta Copper Mining Company was organized in 1898 and included the Plutus, Merriweather, and Eureka Mines. Earlier work on the Plutus and Merriweather properties indicated they had good shows of copper. By mid-1899, any thought of working the property ended when shareholders decided to pursue land in the Arizona copper districts. Several stories concerning the company exposed it as a fraud and scam; only existing to drain money from investors and with no intention of opening the mines for operation. The Erie Consolidated Mining and Reduction Company was formed as a successor to the Wauneta.

Note: In Hamka (2011), the mining company is called the “Wahnita” but is believed to be the same operation.
