Woolcunda Station is a pastoral station located near the New South Wales and South Australia Border, approximately 125 km south of Broken Hill. The privately owned property is in sand dune country with a large ephemeral lake forming the western side. Access to Woolcunda Station is via a road that leaves the Silver City Highway 600 metres Northwest of the Coombah road house.
The gypsum "desert rose" is found by digging in the sand that forms the lake bed. The best gypsum crystals have been dug in the vicinity of the Station Woolshed - 4km Northwest of the Homestead. The layer where the crystals have formed is around 1-1.5 metres below the dry lake bed inside a reddish coloured sand. This sand has been incorporated into the crystals to give them the distinctive reddish colour. Opaque grey-white crystals are also found in association with white powdery gypsum in the same layer as the reddish crystals.
The crystals are believed to have formed by the recrystallisation of dissolved gypsum leached down to this layer by recirculating ground waters, following the rare events when the lake actually fills.
