A small mine, working two NE-trending lodes near Gernick farm. The mine was worked in conjunction with South Gernick Mine, also known as Wheal Top, which was located immediately to the south. The mines were first active around 1830. In 1851, they were re-started under the name West Wheal Grenville.

NOTES: According to Hamilton Jenkin, Wheal Top was an alternative name of South Gernick Mine, while Dines equates Wheal Top with New Wheal Frances and gives the position of this mine 350 yards WSW of Bodrivial farm. At this place, the 1906 edition of the Ordnance Survey Map shows an isolated engine house; however, Wheal Top shaft and another unnamed shaft, which, according to Dines, should be located within a distance of less than 100 yards northeast of said engine house, are not indicated. As was pointed out by Hamilton Jenkin, the description of the New Wheal Frances workings provided by Dines does not agree with the Gernick Mine workings, but it does also not agree with any other mine workings in the area. The corrigenda to the 1988 reprint of Dines address this issue and adopt Hamilton Jenkin's attribution of Wheal Top.
