Goldloch Dägelsberg, Hintergoldingen, Goldingen SG, Eschenbach SG, Wahlkreis See-Gaster, St. Gallen (Sankt Gallen), Schweiz

A historic site where according to the lore gold was mined in the 18th century, but in the 20th century no gold was found thereabout (see Hofmann, 1981, 1984).

It is located on the E slope of the Dägelsberg, 6 km N of Goldingen at N47.31607 E8.98237, (Swiss 716’712 241’725), elev. 1225 m.

Little is known about the miners who drove this adit and shaft between 1760 and 1780. Local lore says it was dug by “Venediger”.

Venediger (also Walhen, Wahlen, Wälsche or Welsche) are in this context foreign miners or prospectors seeking gold, mostly coming from the south.

Around 1890 the Sektion Bachtel of the Swiss Alpine Club cleaned out the shaft and made it accessible again. The entrance is now closed by a locked steel door.
