Goldloch vom Chrüzegg (Isaraloch; Kreuzegg; Kreuzeck; Kamineck; Kammeck), Hintergoldingen, Goldingen SG, Eschenbach SG, Wahlkreis See-Gaster, St. Gallen (Sankt Gallen), Schweiz
A historic site where according to the lore gold was mined in the 18th century, but in the 20th century no gold was found (see Hofmann, 1981, 1984).
It is located about 5 km NE of Goldingen.
The history is not quite clear, but likely it was like this:
First records are from 1757 when a rockslide obliterated an existing adit located in a place called “In den Brüchen” at approx. N47.30114 E9.00581 (Swiss 718'518 240'101) elev. 1230 m. It was in an area with unstable molasse conglomerate (Nagelfluh).
A handful of Italian miners (as one would call them today), locally known as “Venediger”, decided to start anew at a lower elevation, about 350 m SW of the old location. They drove 3 new adits up to 60 m long, starting in a natural cave, located at N47.29978 E9.00130 (Swiss 718'179 239'943), elev. 1022 m.
The cave and 2 of the 3 adits are still accessible.
Venediger (also Walhen, Wahlen, Wälsche or Welsche) are in this context foreign miners or prospectors seeking gold, mostly coming from the south.
In 1990 the restaurant “Sonne” in Hintergoldingen still displayed a drawing of the mine, showing the 3 adits.
After 1780 no activities were recorded, possibly because no gold was found.
It is likely that the miners moved on to the nearby “Goldloch am Dägelsberg”.
