Richmond can almost be considered a southern suburb of Nelson, however Richmond is part of the Tasman rather than Nelson province. It has a population of around 14,000, and sits on flat land close to the southern extremity of Tasman Bay. The Tasman Province Regional Council has its headquarters in Richmond.
Most people bypass Richmond to stay in Nelson. One advantage of Richmond is that it is easier to get around, with Nelson wedged between the bay and mountains. Peak hour can see traffic jams along the coastal road. It can be used as a base to go into Nelson, or along the north-west coastline to the Abel Tasman National Park and beyond.
