Gold was discovered in the Ohui area by James McGregor in 1893. The site was in the vicinity of Nells Stream, a small ephemeral gully heading south from Ohui Stream, about one mile from the coast.
None of the leases pegged in the area produced riches in gold, but the reward lease was especially so. By 1895 the lease had been abandoned. The visitor at this time described the workings as useless, with surface driving and trenching, with gold found at the top of the spur as occasional indications, but no reef. The second source states there were small leaders, one auriferous containing clay and quartz. A small amount was crushed at a battery but much of the gold was lost in the clay.
