Ramså, Ramsafjellet

In 1867 coal was discovered in the vicinity of Ramsa farm (Ramså).

In the period 1869-1872 test drilling was undertaken.

In 1901 ca. 100 tons of coal were taken out, while in 1918 ca. 200 tons were taken out by Sulitjelma AB.

During WW2 the Germans studied the deposits, and were especially interested in the production of oil from the oil shales. However, the necessary equipment never arrived at Andøya and no production ever took place.

During the 1950's (1954?) some oil shale was produced, shipped to the Durox factory at Ankenes and used for the production of building stone.

In 1972 some test drilling took place between Breivik and Skarstein, a few km's north of Ramsa, but this did not result in production. After that, all activity ceased.

The coordinates are for the farm by that name, and no effort was undertaken to locate the "mines" where the coal once was produced. However, that should be possible if one would wish to do so.

The NGU reference mentions the presence of coal, without any further details.
