Diabase quarried 1830's to 1870's for gravel and construction.
The Smithsonian’s 1886 annual report describes the diabase quarried in Medford as “Coarse; dark gray. Used for pavements and the rough work of foundations”.
The quarry area has been part of the Middlesex-Fells Reservation since the late 1890s.
