Hi everyone,

Just acquired this Garnet specimen which I suspect has the wrong labels. 3 confusing labels. See pictures attached. (ex Collection Dr. Brandt - Northeim/Germany)

Size: H:5.9cm x W:4.7cm x D:3.2cm

Label locality says: Rubinberg, Greifendorf, Mittweida, Saxony, Germany (http://www.mindat.org/loc-67965.html) - Perhaps someone is familiar with that spot and could verify what was actually found there?

This piece looks exactly like the Topazolites I have from Heß quarry, Wurlitz, Oberkotzau, Münchberg Metamorphic complex, Franconia, Bavaria, Germany.

Regards,

Jaimy H.

Yes, this is "topazolite" from Wurlitz.

The oldest label had the locality almost right. It reads: "Wurlitz, Sachsen". However, Wurlitz is not in Saxony (Sachsen).

Whoever owned the specimen later on was more confident in Saxony than in Wurlitz, and tried to find a near match at all cost, so "Wurlitz" eventually became "Zöblitz". Subsequent owners then moved the locality around Saxony, presumably from hear-say or from reported garnet occurrences in the literature. This adheres to the category "inventive labelling".

Surprisingly, none of the owners noticed that the species is misidentified, and one of them even wrote on the label "Smaragdgrüner Granat" (emerald-green garnet). This makes you wonder whether he did ever see an emerald ...

Hi Jaimy,

Topazolite from Wurlitz,Bavaria !

I got some mislabeled Specimens from this collection. Wrote that to the Seller, got my Money back and the Specimen will return to him.

I don´t know who was Dr.Brandt, but in my opinion. he wasn´t a "critical collector" .

I also agree with Wurlitz.
