Identity HelpBizzare Green Crystal with small purple fluorite crystals in and on it (Wilberforce, Ontario)

I found this in the snow on the last collecting trip of the year.

It was found between Wilberforce and Harcourt, @ a roadcut. There is Apatite in the area but I've collected 100's of Apatite crystals and never found this...

Is it Augite perhaps or some sort of Pyroxene rock....I can't think of anything else it can be.

It does have a crystal shape to it if you look closely at the sides and top...

Any ideas? It's full of fluorite I know that much...Thank you!

Pyroxene, looks like similar crystals i found at schickler occurence

It looks like diopside to me. Is the cross-section essentially square? How hard is it? What is the host rock?

25th Nov 2015 05:24 UTCThomas Wall

I actuallly thought it was Pyroxene when I got it home and washed it off...I told my girlfriend it was..but then google searched and saw too much variation in Pyroxene pictures and got a bit doubtful of my gut feeling... I honestly don't know how to tell if the cross section is square.....I think I need to consider reading some literature on structures.....

I actually did consider diopside as well until Matt mentioned he found one like it in the same area.

Anyways thanks for checking it out! I'll haveto check the cross section tomorrow after I find out how to do it haha. Thank you! BTW it doesn't look as green and nice in person...it's very crude....rather ugly green, but the form of the crystal is interesting to me...

I know it sounds very dumb but what does it involve to find out cross section lol. Sorry haha. Thank you!

Thanks to Matt Neuzil as well!

Diopside is a pyroxene group member. It is coming in some deposits around there. I had collected some at desmont occurence which is little different environment but diopside just the same.

Diopside would be a good reasonable guess based on what we know thus far.

Agreed.

I have some diopside from near Wilberforce that looks very much like what you have, even with the blurry photos. :-D
