Mineral ShowsWhat Mineral Shows are worth Vending at?

20th Feb 2009 20:27 UTCRyan Lay

Greetings Everyone!

I know times are tough and the market is changing rapidly but what shows

besides the main shows are worth going and setting up at?

I do all Martin Zinn's and Houston and SF. But as for the smaller ones. I know that there are many

shows that are smaller that are worth going. One somewhere in NC or SC which i want to know more about and how about the one in Michigan at the Embassy Suites.

Anything would help and if anyone one is reading this overseas, I would like to attend other shows besides Munich and St. Marie.

Thanks

Hi Ryan,

we had the same question recently, and discussed about it ;-)

our answer to your question is here http://www.strahlen.org/smf/index.php/topic,1676.0.html (needs login, registering takes 5 seconds)

although every (group of) person(s) might have a different view

Cheers! Frank

I would like to suggest the Rochester Mineralogical Symposium. Its not primarily a dealer show but it is on the circuit for many mineral people.

Any show at which you can at least break even is worthwhile. A show is a great place to meet new customers, and renew relationships with existing customers, especially if those existing customers are internet-only customers. Last November I did a moderately small show (about 15 dealers) and met in person one of my internet customers. We chatted for quite awhile about many things, mineralogical and otherwise. Now that we know each other better, the has increased his internet purchases 10x (his words).

Even if your sales just cover the booth fees, it's still an advertising investment. Gets your name out to some folks who may not know of you otherwise. Let customers learn that you're a nice, knowledgeable guy and not one of the over-priced, elitist snob dealers (or collectors). (I am not naming names...I count some of these high end dealers among my best mineralogical friends.)

The kansas city show seems to be growing into a great show. It will happen on March 13th through the 15th. We wrote a small report on the 2008 show at our website.

I don't where you are based , Ryan, but you might want to consider the Seattle Mineral Market in May, check out the link from the Mineral Shows section from Bart Cannon and decide whether or not you want to be a part of the kid friendliest show around. It is not only fun, but the sales aren't bad and the costs are low by comparison to other venues that you already work in.

Ryan,

You mentioned the Embassy Suites show in Detroit. That show is a wholesale show, and I usually don't even bother to go because there are only a couple of mineral dealers, I guess you won't have too much competition. If you want to come to the Detroit area, the MMS Detroit show (the one that used to be at the Armory) is the way to go in my mind. It is the largest show in the midwest by a significant margin, and gets a lot of customers from 3 states.

The two shows in Franklin, NJ tend to be good shows if the wether is good, I set up outside.

Some of my best shows are smaller club shows and not the larger ones. Just like Steve I meet internet customers at almost every show I attend. Sometimes I do more business from the contacts made at the show then business at the show.
