Improving Mindat.orgPhotos with wrong location info

6th Oct 2006 15:49 UTCJesse Fisher Expert

Jolyon,

I have noticed a number of specimen photos, uploaded from a few dealer's sites, that have incorrect locations attributed to them. In the past, I have just appended a note to the entry giving what I think is the correct locality. It occured to me, however, that I should probably ask the powers that be how someone from the peanut gallery such as myself should deal (or not) with things like this.

Cheers,

Jesse

Post them here. They need to get resolved/corrected.

Noticed today were a good number of tourmaline photos posted to "Mogok Burma", which are most certainly from the recent finds at Mihn Tien, Luc Yen district, Vietman. I also recall seeing some metamorphic minerals such as actinolite posted to "Stak Nala, Pakistan" The Stak Nala deposits are granitic pegmatites, not alpine metamorphics.

Mogok is a big gem trading center to which traders bring rough from far away localities because they know they'll find gem buyers there. (Same situation with Teofilo Otoni and Governador Valadares in Brazil... etc., etc.) I suspect that Jesse has uncovered the tip of the iceberg, and we probably have more things on the "Mogok" list that don't really belong there. So, thanks Jesse; and anyone else who notices such errors, please tell us. Unlike in paper books, we can actually correct mistakes here!

The actinolite from "Stak Nala, Pakistan" might come from a metamorphic country rock hosting the pegmatites. I am sure there are not only pegmatites in this Pakistan area.

According to Laurs, et al, 1998, the host rocks for the Stak Nala pegmatites are biotite-bearing and leucocratic gneisses. These sort of rocks are not nearly mafic enough to yield much in the way of Ca and Mg-bearing amphiboles. The actinolite in question likely came from Tormiq, which though relatively nearby, is definately not the same location.

Thanks, Jesse. Have sent a complaint.

Here's another one. This pyromorphite is listed as being from "Cordoba, Argentina" when in actuallity it is from Cordoba, Spain (the caption says as much.)

Actinolite http://www.mindat.org/photo-47621.html (locality presently given as Mogok, Burma - it appears(?) that the loality had previously been changed by someone to Stak Nala and later back to Mogok):

Rob Lavinsky kindly replied:

"i bought this from bill larson. it IS an actinolite and IS from burma, and

he brough tit back personally. this is the locality given to him in burma

for it

Back to the original question about what to do when errors are discovered, I'm assuming that it would be preferable to bring them to the attention of the Mindat "staff" rather than taking it upon our selves to reassign photos to new localities. If everyone started changing entries whenever someone thinks there's an error things could get a bit (more) chaotic.

I recall seeing the actinolite in question listed under Stak Nala, which to my knowledge appeared incorrect. I didn't reassign the photo to a new locality, however.

The procedure is to report mistakes and errors here. That's what this forum of the eBB is for.
