LocalitiesOuro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil

18th Mar 2024 15:11 UTCJhonatan Gomes

Please, someone created a location "Ouro Preto" within the city of Ouro Preto"

This is an unacceptable error. Please, someone needs to merge the 2 created locations.

Hi Jhonatan,

according to the Portuguese-language Wikipedia page, the city/municipality of Ouro Preto is divided into several municipal districts, one of which is the municipal district of Ouro Preto itself (the city's seat -Ouro Preto (distrito-sede) ).

That is why there is an Ouro Preto municipal district within Ouro Preto city/municipality on Mindat.

The borders of the muncipal district appear to be incorrect on OpenStreetMap, though. They currently coincide with the borders of the municipality itself, which is obviously incorrect.

It is clear that there was an error in interpreting the text regarding the link you shared:

Ouro Preto, was created as a district in 1711, and in 1823 it was “promoted” to city.

Ouro Preto is a city divided into several district's (Cachoeira do Campo, Antonio Pereira, Rodrigo Silva, etc.), but they all report hierarchically to Ouro Preto, that is, each district does not have a city hall, all municipalities report their demands to Ouro Preto, therefore, is a thirst. And this is written very clearly in the table made in the link where you shared me, there was a lack of correct interpretation, perhaps due to the translator used.

There is no district of Ouro Preto within the city of Ouro Preto, this is very clear. If you want to improve your mindat, perhaps the best idea is to put, for example: “Imperial topaz from  Antonio Pereira distric, Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil”

Furthermore, I suggest that nowadays someone feel like making some updates to the Brazil localization, contact an expert here, in recent months I have seen suggestions for corrections made to the Brazil localization that could have been avoided if there had been communication.

The smallest area should be:
Ouro Preto District.

If so, then all other "municipal districts" of the municipality/city should have the word "district" added to their locality string, too.

It could be done, but I personally think this is unnecessary, since the "type of locality" (municipal district) is made clear at each of these localities already, there is no need to add "district" to their locality string?

In general we adhere to Wikipedia, i.e. if the Wiki page has "district" (or "municipality") in its name, we also have. However, Wikipedia is inconsistent when you compare neighbouring or comparable countries.

Thank you for clarifying this, Uwe. I agree, Wikipedia is not always consistent.

Jhonatan,

What does SEDE stand for in Portuguese in map found in link below? It appears to be an abbreviation of a district.

John

Sede = headquarters means the main area of a city that has several districts.

The historic center of Ouro Preto is at the city/municipality headquarters.

the other regions are districts, which do not have "their own authority", all laws, demands, and main government bodies, are at headquarters.

19th Mar 2024 00:36 UTCJohn Christian

Thanks.

Then a good and informative English translation would be: Ouro Preto Headquarters District.

No! Forget district! Ouro Preto its a city!

Hello Jhonatan,

I have removed the borders of the "municipal district of Ouro Preto within the city/municipality of Ouro Preto", because they were incorrect (they were incorrectly coinciding with the boundaries of the city/municipality).

The way I see it, we now have 2 options:

- given the apparent existence of a district called "Sede" in the map John has provided  (thank you for finding this, John!), I would suggest leaving it as it is right now, because "Sede" just means "seat" in Portuguese, i.e. the "municipal district of Ouro Preto which serves as the municipal seat within the municipality/city of Ouro Preto".

- however, if this map is somehow in error and if what you say is correct, I would propose that all sublocalities that are currently under the "Ouro Preto municipal district" are moved to the city/municipality level, and then the "Ouro Preto municipal district" is deleted.

Let us know which of these 2 options you think is best :-)

Ouro Preto is a city/municipality, formed by several non-emancipated districts.
Districts are areas mixed between urbanized areas and rural areas.

The city (in the case of Ouro Preto) is divided between neighborhoods, has autonomy between districts, is mostly urbanized and is also where public offices, schools, banks, etc. are located.

So, I suggest leaving it as it has been in mindat for years:

"Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil"

If we talk about an district in Ouro Preto? simple:

"xxx district, Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil"

It's a very simple issue to resolve, just remain as it has always been here in mindat for many years. No matter how much I try to explain, certain things are difficult even for us Brazilians to understand, imagine trying to explain to foreigners.

Talking about Ouro Preto is a very fragile subject, after all we are talking about one of the oldest cities in Brazil, which has existed since Brazil was a colony of Portugal.

Furthermore, I consider this matter closed, it is a bit exhausting to go around in circles.

As I've said hundreds of times here, those who understand Brazil are Brazilians, just as those who understand Holland are Dutch, Germany are Germans... and etc…

Cheers for all
