Improving Mindat.orgThe County Geognosy and Mineralogy of Scotland - M.F.Heddle (1878)

8th Nov 2014 17:56 UTCRoy Starkey 🌟 Manager

I am trying to establish how many copies of Matthew Forster Heddle’s “The County Geognosy and Mineralogy of Scotland” remain in existence.

Currently I am aware of 4 copies in private hands, and the Worldcat website lists the following libraries as holding copies:-

1. National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh

2. University of Glasgow, Glasgow

3. Texas A&M University-San Antonio , San Antonio, TX 78224

4. University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI 48109

5. University of the West Library, Rosemead, CA 91770

6. Wheaton College - Buswell Library, Wheaton, IL 60187

7. Wilmington University Library, New Castle, DE 19720

The book is a collection papers published by Heddle in the Mineralogical Magazine, and elsewhere, together with various bound-in documents, and poems. The title page (which was obviously printed specially for the purpose) gives the publishers as Lake and Lake of Truro (who were also publishers of the Mineralogical Magazine), and a publication date of 1878. The publication date is anomalous and puzzling because several of the papers were not published / printed until well after this date.

See for example the Mineralogical Magazine Archive Min Mag Archive

III.—The County Geognosy and Mineralogy of Scotland Mineralogical Magazine 1878 2 : 9-35.Heddle paper in Min.Mag.

XIII.—The Geognosy and Mineralogy of Scotland Mineralogical Magazine 1878 2 : 106-133.Heddle paper in Min.Mag.

Errata in Dr. Heddle's Paper on Unst (Min. Mag., No. 8) Mineralogical Magazine 1878 2 : 133-133. Heddle paper in Min.Mag.

XV.—The Geognosy and Mineralogy of Scotland Mineralogical Magazine 1878 2 : 155-190. Heddle paper in Min.Mag.

XXII.—A Brief Description of the Map of Shetland, Issued with Vol. II of the Mineralogical Magazine Mineralogical Magazine 1879 2 : 253-255. Heddle paper in Min.Mag.

It seems likely that the real publication date must have been in the 1890s. The various bound-in extras vary from copy to copy, and it may be that the original papers were actually off-prints, and the additional items were bound in according to what was available or to personalise individual copies for recipients.

My own copy contains the following components:-

Preface 5 pages

Orkney & Shetland

Unst

Fetlar

Mainland

Papa Stour

Foula

Orkney 1

Orkney 2

Caithness

Sutherland pages 221-520 (approx. half of the book)

On pectolite and okenite (Trans. Geol. Soc. Glasgow)

Popular Microscopical Studies – Hebridean Gneiss

A summary of the book is provided in The National Library of Scotland online catalogue NLS Catalogue

I would be very interested to hear from anyone who owns a copy, or knows of the whereabouts of privately held or institutionally held copies of the book. It would also be great if any Mindaters live close enough to any of the USA libraries listed above, and who might be able to call in and compile a list of contents for the copies held by these institutions.

Thanks for your help

Roy,

I found this in the McGill University (Montreal) library database. It seems to be just an article in Geological Magazine. Try the Geological Survey of Canada library. They have the largest geosciences library in this country.

The County Geognosy and Mineralogy of Scotland. By M. Foster Heddle, M.D., F.R.S.E., etc., Professor of Chemistry in the University of St. Andrews.

Right - had missed this small print...

Can you send me a copy of the file please? I can't get it from either link.

It is the same copy at Hathi and googlebooks - as it is american I assume many of you in Europe cannot download from the google-link - but there are ways to make the google-link open and then best download the pdf, because it is really unsmooth to browse.

Roy - obviously there is a copy at our university library.

cheers

Hi Everyone - well that's a "blast from the past"!

Strangely there is a copy coming up for auction shortly in Edinburgh

This one is bound as two volumes, something I have not seen before. It is dedicated to Thomas Aitken was the medical director of the Inverness Lunatic Asylum and a leading light in the Field Club.

If anyone can download the Google Books or Hathi Trust version to generate a list of contents, that would be interesting (also, where is the copy that they scanned / digitised).

Johan - Similarly, if you are able to post a listing of the contents of the copy in your university library, that would be good to see also.

Cheers

Two newer printings are available (but not of the 1878 printing) on bookfinder.com

Hi Kevin - thanks.

I suspect that these print on demand facsimiles are generally not worth the postage.

Cheers

Very true, there's nothing like the real thing.

(also, where is the copy that they scanned / digitised) - Google's copy is in the University of Michigan library.

It is with 99.99 % probability the google/hathi copy they are selling "print on demand". They probably don't even have the file yet - it's business - they download and print the pdf when a customer demands.

Too true - they're fine for text only reading, but the quality doesn't really support quality diagrams or photographs (in later text books).

Jolyon:

If it is out of copyright (and I would imagine that it is), is there any chance of a copy going onto the books download page here?
