Fluorite Gelbe Birke MineBeierfeldErzgebirgskreisSaxonyGermanyFor a few years now, I have been searching for a nice one of these interesting German fluorite. I was waiting for a "cute" one to come along, as the specimens tend to be rather unwieldy. The fluorite from Gelbe Birke (Yellow Birch) ...

A closeup.
Feb 2023Pyrite on Quartz- China.Posted by Paul Stephen Cyr in Fakes & Frauds.
I'm curious to hear some thoughts on these specimens, from an undisclosed Chinese location- they appear almost "too good to be true", and what makes me suspicious is seeing some of the pyrite on incomplete termination faces, yet no signs of inclusion elsewhere. The pyrite are almost perfect ...

Nov 2022Re: Curating - Generation of labels for various sizes and style of acrylic boxes as well as open display mounts.Reply from Paul Stephen Cyr in Techniques for Collectors.
I found a good solution for durable, laminated labels. First step would be to prepare your label file. I don't know the magic number, but you should be able to figure it out. Next, you can upload the file to the Staples website, to have them print it. My suggestion is to get a laminated ...

Birthday treat to myself last month. A dream of a Riemvasmaak fluorite. The big crystals trick the eye's attention, but there are small perfect clusters of gemmy octahedral crystals too. Riemvasmaak Northern CapeSouth Africa
Oct 2022Re: Spanish 'Red Quartz'/Gypsum LocalityReply from Paul Stephen Cyr in General.
Two localities I am familiar with are Chella and Montroy, both in Valencia. The matrix pieces in gypsum seem to often be attributed to Montroy.
Sep 2022Re: Suggestion for new Discussion Group: New FindsReply from Paul Stephen Cyr in Improving Mindat.org.
Not quite what I am implying Keith. I am talking on a global scale. A place to discuss new discoveries in their fresh state- if not to be a first announcement, then to share awareness of a new find. To my knowledge, no such commentary is held in an organized way anywhere on the ...
Oct 2022Suggestion for new Discussion Group: New FindsPosted by Paul Stephen Cyr in Improving Mindat.org.
A dedicated space to discuss new, verified, or recent finds would be much appreciated somewhere on the internet- and especially here on Mindat. I personally yearn for a place to wax and wane about new mineral finds, and I'm sure many of you have felt the same. An added bonus here would ...
May 2022Re: Talk on New Mexico fluorite - help wanted !Reply from Paul Stephen Cyr in General.
Hi Herwig, I may be of assistance. New Mexico fluorite are some of my favorites, and I have a decent collection of them from several locations. Feel free to send me a message. It would seem there is plenty of time to prepare- perhaps I’ll even make it to the symposium again this year.
Apr 2022Re: Cleaning LudlamiteReply from Paul Stephen Cyr in Techniques for Collectors.
Thanks for the replies! Steve, I appreciate the emphasis  on the Fe2 component. Ultrasonic would likely get the job done… unfortunately I don’t have one on hand these days. Iron Out is tempting in this situation for sure, but caution needs to be taken. I have one other piece ...
Apr 2022Re: Cleaning LudlamiteReply from Paul Stephen Cyr in Techniques for Collectors.
The material to be removed seems to just be a bit of iron oxide in the cracks.
Apr 2022Cleaning LudlamitePosted by Paul Stephen Cyr in Techniques for Collectors.
I am looking to clean up a ludlamite from the recent finds along side vivianite from Cabeca do Cachorro in Amazonas, Brazil. I recently saw a thread where Alfredo P. mentioned a dip of a few minutes in Iron Out, but it sounds slightly risky to me. Examples I saw in the past in Tucson were very ...
Apr 2022Suggestion for “Characterization” TagsPosted by Paul Stephen Cyr in Improving Mindat.org.
Imagine if each specimen had an option to include a specific “Characterization” or “Description” tag- this would greatly benefit the user experience when searching galleries for specific phenomena or habit, bridging gaps between multiple species that show similar ...

Just chiming in for a second opinion- I also agree with Alto Ligonha. I have a great morganite from there, perhaps the best beryl in my collection.
Mar 2021Re: Looking for Help in the Philadelphia AreaReply from Paul Stephen Cyr in General.
Hey there Steve, I would be interested to see his grave myself! I can help with photos, but not exactly sure when it will be convenient. Feelfree to send me a message- will be a good excuse to get some Ethiopian food too.
Jun 2019Unique Inclusion in Herkimer QuartzPosted by Paul Stephen Cyr in General.
A friend and I were digging a couple weeks ago at a private claim in Mohawk Township, New York. It was a great weekend, and both of us located INCREDIBLE pockets, bearing all different size of Herks. This is one crystal that he found nearby- which he was kind enough to follow up on my persistent ...

Dec 2018Re: Soaking AntleriteReply from Paul Stephen Cyr in Techniques for Collectors.
This is true, thanks. I have never heard any adverse reaction of getting Brochantite or antlerite wet.
Dec 2018Soaking AntleritePosted by Paul Stephen Cyr in Techniques for Collectors.
I have a specimen of antlerite from the Chuquicamata Mine in Antofagasta, Chile. There is a potentially sulfer-based light green/white coating over much of the specimen. Soaking an edge for a minute or even chipping with a toothpick, it seems to come right off. However, many nicely formed antlerite ...

Dec 2016Re: Cleaning Chalcopyrite CrystalsReply from Paul Stephen Cyr in Techniques for Collectors.
Thomas, I may keep it out and try your method. I have noticed a small crack in the chalcopyrite, but I figure a chemical treatment would be more gentle than abrasive methods. I figured abrasion would works as well, but would run the risk of interfering with the crystal structure.

Hey Wayne, thanks for your reply. Using Super Iron out. After being in over night, the edges of the black crystalline area are looking clean, and are a bright blue with purple iridescence- I'm getting excited! I'll take it out to dry before changing the solution today and get a pic for you. ...
Dec 2016Cleaning Chalcopyrite CrystalsPosted by Paul Stephen Cyr in Techniques for Collectors.
I have run into some crystalline chalcopyrite specimens that often have a bit of crust. I have one crystalline piece soaking in Iron Out for now, which seems to be slowly "loosening" the hold of some black coating, but I am wanting to remove the coating in full. Would a calculated dip in muriatic ...

Sep 2016Re: Green opals and waterReply from Paul Stephen Cyr in Techniques for Collectors.
Glycerin might work well for this project. I have been using it to store amber in small vials, and they look very nice. Should make your opal's colors pop. Nice looking material by the way!

Photo Photo These tourmalines were recently acquired from a friend, who got them from a friend of his who lived in Maine and did her own prospecting. I am looking to try to pinpoint a precise quarry locale if possible. I knew that the "black" caps I saw under the shade of the EZ-Up were hiding ...
