Aug 2014Re: Doubtful Gypsum from MoroccoReply from Jon Mommers in Improving Mindat.org.
Chinkapook / Chiningollah gypsum are normally thicker bladed and not quite as lustrous, I dug thousands of specimens up there long before Tom started with all his leases
Aug 2014Re: Doubtful Gypsum from MoroccoReply from Jon Mommers in Improving Mindat.org.
John, Pernatty Lagoon gypsums are quite different. more coarse, never seen anything like that from Eyre Peninsular, which tend to be small and colourless. However new deposit is a possibility, but the Ponds at Mount Gunson are atill the main contender for me
Aug 2014Re: Doubtful Gypsum from MoroccoReply from Jon Mommers in Improving Mindat.org.
This specimen is more likely from from the ponds near The Cattlegrid Mine, Mount Gunson, South Australia, same area as the green Gypsum's, it is more translucent and finer bladed than the Victorian material, which I collected extensively .
Aug 2014Re: Broken Hill South Mine and MMM MineReply from Jon Mommers in Improving Mindat.org.
List against Kintore Opencut and South Mines Ralph, that is where they are most likely to be seen by those who are this interested ( I certainly am) in the area. Far more complex than I would have imagined.
Jun 2014Re: Vivanite nodules - Anglesea, Australia - stability questionReply from Jon Mommers in General.
Stephanie, I have a polished face from Anglesea, self collected nodule in the early 1980's, that is stable. It has been kept in the dark and I agree with Alfredo, humidity and heat can destroy them. Anglesea nodules from experience are quite stable but are subject to cracking on occassion, if ...

Apr 2014Filer's Redlands California.Posted by Jon Mommers in General.
I recently picked up a nice Elk Creek barite crystal which came with an old type written label from "Filer's" Redlands California. I was wondering if anyone knew of this mineral dealership or was it a collector ?
Sep 2013Re: Native Silver IdentificationReply from Jon Mommers in Identity Help.
All three are typical of the many forms of silver that was collected at Elura, these all came from the one great find in the 1980's. Several people in Australia living in and around Broken Hill and Cobar were prosecuted by police and the mine owners for theft when word of these first got, some of ...
Aug 2014Re: Broken Hill South Mine and MMM MineReply from Jon Mommers in Improving Mindat.org.
That was my belief as well Steve
Dec 2013Re: PostageReply from Jon Mommers in General.
Hi Keith, in Australia, at least we are not charged on a cubic basis for international postage, only domestic mail. The dimensions are recorded but this is for security reasons, to ensure a package has not been tampered with. No doubt cubic billing will be introduced for outgoing international ...
Dec 2013Re: PostageReply from Jon Mommers in General.
Jenna, you get no argument from me there, however buyers need to remember that postal rates are not sent by the seller but by government or semi government agencies and most sellers work to achieve the best outcome for both parties, I believe. Over the last 24 months or so, the USD has slipped ...
Dec 2013Re: PostageReply from Jon Mommers in General.
Hi Eddy, I am sure I will make no friends by responding to this thread. There are a lot of people subsidising the postage on the minerals that they mail out because of they do not wish to offend their buyers. Buyers at times complain about postage charges This is understandable when a buyer pays ...
Jul 2013Re: Locations for future Mindat conferences?Reply from Jon Mommers in General.
An Australian circuit, taking in Dundas Tasmania, Broken Hill, Olary and Adelaide Hills Phosphate Deposits. Plenty of good food, wine, minerals and no black hawks required
Mar 2015Re: Amythest ,Wyloo Western Australia.Reply from Jon Mommers in Improving Mindat.org.
The "Austwen Mine" Wyloo Station is a deposit that was worked commerically in the 1960's and 1970's for amethystine Quartz for the lapidary trade predominately, both for faceting and tumbling. My understanding the bulk of the production was sent to Germany. The property was idle and ownership ...

Jun 2011Re: Passing of William (Bill) AirdReply from Jon Mommers in General.
I am saddened to hear of Bill's passing. He was an avid and passionate collector and one of the first prople I ever traded micro minerals with back in the late 1970's. His passing is a great loss to the collecting fraternity.

Sep 2010Re: mailing from Canda to the US : lost radioactive mineralsReply from Jon Mommers in Lost and Stolen Specimens.
Hi Maggie, my sympathies, both with the parcels going missing in the US ( have had the same experience recently) and also with outrageous postal charges and ours are about to go up again at the end of the month.........it is absolutely crazy, please don't get me started on tracking ...
May 2010Re: How to keep mineral collectors from leaving the hobby.Reply from Jon Mommers in General.
I have to agree with Alfredo and John, prices do not keep people away from collecting, they can however alienate some long time collectors, who find that their disposable income can no longer keep pace with their collecting desires. The need for collectors to be exposed to minerals is essential to ...
May 2010Re: Conflicting locality on Gold specimen.Reply from Jon Mommers in Improving Mindat.org.
Brian Shelton was one of Australia's leading collectors, there is a good write up about him in the Australian Journal, he had a very fine gold collection. Part of his gold collection went to the Perth Mint a number of years before his death, the balance of the gold collection was handled by Cyril ...
May 2010Re: Conflicting locality on Gold specimen.Reply from Jon Mommers in Improving Mindat.org.
Greetings Steven and Ralph. specimen #233196 was from Brian Sheltons collection I believe as was #233198 which was also from Brian Sheltons collection, both are attributed to Kalgoorlie/Boulder. Both are not from Boulder/ Kalgoorlie, the second I believe is from Wedderburn in Victoria, the first ...
Apr 2010Re: Embolite (chlorargryite) plus unknown, Broken Hill.Reply from Jon Mommers in Identity Help.
Hi Greg, the orange crystals are spessartine garnets and the green mostly malachite although brochantite is also a possibility. I have had a number of specimens like this, you have to keep in mind that originally this was predominately galena ore with garnets and other gangue minerals that has ...

Photo Hi Gail, girls are doing well, back to school Monday after Easter break Crusty crustals relates more to the ham fisted posters typing skills (for want of a better term) than the specimen. Two more photo's from Luina, this time IMA 2009-046 the fibrous white to greenish felted ...

Sep 2009Re: Great ebay experience!Reply from Jon Mommers in General.
For perky and similiar boxes I find the plastic wrap used dry cleaning bags works very well. On the other hand had a specimen once sent to me wrapped in shrinkwrap. I am sure that the specimen was fine before I started unwrapping, unfortunately it wasn't such good condition by the time I had ...

Dec 2011Re: Collecting HazardsReply from Jon Mommers in Field Collecting.
Jenna, Unfortunately for the foreign viewers of U Tube, the "scared weird little guys" failed to mention Drop Bears: a Koala mutation/variant. A real danger at nights in the Australian bush, especially for those collectors out with their UV lights or doing a little highgrading. I was assured ...

I'm curious if anyone has seen material from the Burra mine in NSW. Interesting Flinders county is so similiar to Flinders Ranges in name, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burra,_New_South_Wales Cheers Jon

I agree Mark, it is easily done esp. when multiple photo's Cheers Jon
