Name:
Named in 1906 by Waldemar Christofer Brøgger in honor of George Thurland Prior [December 16, 1862 Oxford, England, United Kingdom – March 8, 1936 Hatch End, England, United Kingdom], keeper of minerals at the British Museum of Natural History 1909-1927. Prior was an exceptional analytical chemist and was head of the analytical department through most of his tenure. He named a number of minerals, jointly or solely: derbylite, fermorite, florencite, iodembolite, lewisite, serendibite, teallite, tripuhyite, senaite, and zirkelite. He was an important researcher in meteoritics.
