Named in honour of Fahrid Shakirovitch Kutyev (Фарид Шакирович Кутыев) (26 February 1943 ‒ 29 March 1993), geologist from the Institute of Volcanology of USSR Academy of Sciences, who played a key role in the discovery of the Koryak-Kamchatka Platinum Belt, including the Ledyanoy Creek placer platinum deposit, where the mineral was discovered. The name is pronounced (ku fa rait).
Known synthetic analogue. First natural Pt-Pb alloy.

Type Occurrence of Kufahrite
General Appearance of Type Material:
Alteration rims which are formed together with tetraferroplatinum after isoferroplatinum, or as grains up to 150 µm in size.
Place of Conservation of Type Material:
Type material is deposited in the collections of the Fersman Mineralogical Museum, Russian Academy of Sciences, Leninskiy Prospekt 18-2, Moscow 119071, Russia, registration number 5576/1
Geological Setting of Type Material:
Found in isoferroplatinum grains from heavy-mineral concentrates.
