Description
Quartz var. chalcedony has encased calcite, preserving its original form. Specimens that show open cross-sections of the replacement are hollow, though it is unclear whether all the calcite has dissolved away. This find was named in honor of Virgil Lueth, the state mineralogist of New Mexico (among other accolades).
