In colonial times, a 10 to 100-meter thick stratum of mineralized calcareous sandstone on Cerro Sayari (4,300 meters elevation) was mined for silver. (This mineralized stratum, perhaps of "Carlin-type" origin, just a narrow horizon within the generally sterile 2,000 meter thick Cretaceous sandstones of the Torotoro Formation, continues several kilometers southwards to the Atocha mine (qv).) Ore ran 1 to 12% Pb, 1 to 700 ppm Ag.
